So many bands from Britain covered blues tunes from black artists back in the '60s. Check out Joan Osborne doing a cover of Slim Harpos "Shake Your Hips" after you listen to Slim and the Rolling Stones do it. It sounds easy enough but I just love it.

Do you think ZZTop stole it?

Also may be of interest, about 10 years ago I picked up the book written by Bill Wyman "Bill Wyman's Blues Odyssey: A Journey to the music's Heart and Soul" and the companion CD.

It's a big book, well written and beautifully produced, I really enjoyed it and still do.

Love In Vain was also covered by Eric Clapton.

I'm actually fairly familiar with everyone you mentioned, I guess I just missed the Stones! A friend of mine was going to let me have his copy of John Mayall with Eric Clapton, I need to start bugging him about that again.

I've also been digging through my parents record collection, and it's not completely without any Rolling Stones albums. But everything they have is mostly from the '70s, so no early blues stuff there.

Hi Rebecca,

Have you ever read "Life" by Keith Richards? If not, I highly recommend you do so. You will discover where his blues roots are from. I have recently finished reading the book and it certainly is one of the best biography I have read in a long time.

^^ I'm in the middle of reading it, quite entertaining, funny and still I wouldn't want to trade places for all the money in the world. Then again had I experimented to the point Richards did, I probably would have flatlined long ago..... The book is a bit disturbing as far as recounts of overtly excessive lifestyles. Personal lives aside, the music is what has always interested us.

Becca I would suggest the Live recording of " Get your Ya Ya's Out ". I think this is one of the best portrayals of the Stones dynamics where both Taylor and Richards were on cue.
The opening " Jumping Jack Flash " just showcases that moment of silence between the change from A to B. The next song " Carol " just shows how much Chuck Berry's style is so prevalent in the Stones.

I never thought that the Stones work with Brian Jones was their best because of Brian's early descent into Chaos. It was a pity as the very early recordings showcased a facility as a multi instrumentalist. Still very much worth a few good listening sessions.

Taylor's work was a completely different direction, the DVD " Ladies and Gentlemen " showcases the interplay between the two. As it was from the 70's it's a great glimpse into what they were like when firing on all cylinders ...

For me I think the current line up of Wood and Richards is the best, two solid rythm players who always complement each other and never forget that it's not about them but rather the music.. I'm also a bit biased here as I saw Ron Wood years ago when he was with the Face's.
He is just a really solid rythm player, I would suggest a look see into the Faces " A nod is as Good As A Wink " as well as " Ohh La La " ( Not quite like Grace Potter's ) much cheekier.. 8)

I'll quote Jack Black:

"Led Zeppelin. The greatest rock 'n roll band of all time. Yeah. That's right. Better than the Beatles. Better than the Stones. Even better than Tenacious D. Yeah. And if you don't agree with me, it's because *you* never did the Zeppelin Marathon. Yeah. The Zeppethon is when you sit your *ss down and listen to all 9 Zep albums in a row. It's the rock 'n roll taj. The ultimate pilgremmage to heavy metal mecca. The thing that all true fans must do at least once in their lifetime."

Stones are pretty good though. :P

Jack Black Eh ... :?:
Not exactly a serious person but that's OK .....

Never did the Zep marathon, but I did hitchhike 60 miles in a snowstorm to see them at Market Square Arena ....

Of course if " When the Levee breaks " is concerned, checking out the original by Memphis Minnie would be best ....
