The past few days have been uncommonly cold here on the island part of the province. Where we are so close to the ocean,it usually doesn't get terribly cold as the ocean helps keep the temps higher in winter.Last night the temp went down to -18 C and with the wind chill it was closer to -25. My daughters in Labrador had to contend with -55 C temps yesterday and today and flesh can get severely frost-bitten in under two minutes. to top it all off we had about 8" of snow last night too but where it was so cold the snow wasn't heavy and wet like it usually is when the temps are around 0 C,but it was just like powder.

This cold is really affecting my hands, even with my really efficent thermal gloves my hands still get stiff and cold. This is beginning to look more like Raynauds as each day goes by as my hands are becoming more temperature sensitive than ever.I think that my next step will have to be a pair of battery heated thermal gloves, there are some pretty good ones available now but they cost about $200,but I guess my hands are worth it.

So far the forecast is saying that we will continue with this deep freeze for the next few days,I loathe winter even on the relatively warm days but when it gets like this I hate to step outside the door,I should have born on Maui.

I guess $200 seems a lot but your hands are worth it if it works. I used to live the other side of Canada to you and in the prairies it sure dropped off cold, the importance of good outerwear is key.

I'm sure you know all about layering, but I used to buy oversized gloves and wear 3 or 4 pairs of glove liners under the waterproof layer, and I never had a problem. Although I'm very hardy when it comes to the cold.

Best jacket I ever owned was a big puffy down jacket for snowboarding, it could be -50 and you were still too hot if you wore anything more than a tshirt underneath

Here in Hawaii it just dipped into the high 50's. Man I felt like busting out my extreme winter gear!

Hi Derek: you mentioned this lace thing once before, and that time someone asked why you needed two pairs? I don't recall an answer being given.

Personally, I think if it's that cold then laces aren't enough. You should at least wear the boots to go with them, and perhaps some clothes would be a good idea too.

Seriously though, those heated gloves sound excellent. Where I live it never, ever gets as cold as what you describe, but still I'd like a pair of electric gloves. I hate having cold hands.

Stay snug - C

Ceri, I think the two laces thing is just an old saying, an expression.

Try Gerbing's apparel for your cold weather needs.

-7°F right now here in Minneapolis/St. Paul.

Cold as it sounds, we're kinda used to it. Under 20°F it doesn't actually feel that cold - the air cannot hold moisture.

It's colder here at 25°F than at 0°F because of the moisture.

cheers!

The weather has done an about-face tonight and we are having a real heavy downpour of rain. The long range forecast for the next few days says that we will be getting a total accumulation of 70-80cm of snow by the end of the week. That's one thing about living here-the weather is never boring and is constantly unpredictable.

Ah, is that it? I haven't heard it - and I admit I still don't quite see what it's getting at. The picture it paints in my mind is of guitslinger standing in the snow stark naked but for some laces knotted tidily round his ankles. I'm thinking; hey, no wonder his hands are cold! And his fingers may not be the only thing that needs an electrically heated mitt (and no, I'm not suggesting guitslinger should be wearing an ex-presidential candidate) .

Confusing sayings: now there's a thread topic to keep us warm on a cold winter's evening...

Cheers - C

I'm getting a real education on the right coast weather, I'll only visit in the summer.

Round here global warming is working out pretty well, over 10 C here for a few days, just like last year, very little snow all season. Don't mind a bit.

Spring isn't too far away, hang in there.

And someone from UK not getting a funny little saying, that's a good one, I thought they invented them. Well as my mum says, gotta go spend a penny.

Naturally, we invented most sayings. But not all of them: che sera sera.

Cold enough for 2 pairs of laces is just a nonsensical saying around to denote that it's intensely cold. When the weather gets deathly cold here people layer their clothing usually doubling up on socks, undershirts, longjohns, sweaters etc.

Today the weather is back to deepfreeze temps with a daytime high of -8 C and that equates to -13 C with the windchill factor.Tonight the temp is expected to rise to the region of -2 C and then tomorrow we are expecting a snowfall of 15 - 25 cm and with a total accumulation of around 70 cm by week's end.The 39 C in Australia looks very inviting now and if I had the money I'd certainly go visit my relatives in Tasmania and in the Sydney area. The thing is with the cold it's very hard to escape it when you go outside but at least when it's hot you can get relief by taking a dip in the ocean-usually anyway.

BTW another saying around here to denote extremely frigid temps is "Colder than a mother-in-law's kiss."

In the past when I had cold feet and hands I found regular use, once a day, of Ginkgo Biloba to help immensely. It is a peripheral circulation enhancer owing to its mild blood thinning properties.

Of course, since I am not a doctor and this is not a typical medical remedy, it is all in my head and completely bogus. This post was for comedic effect, no matter how honest the information was. Full disclaimer in effect. Carry on.
