Not sure if this is the place to ask but I will anyway. I am refurbishing a vintage acoustic and there was a great deal of checking in the finish. After taking down the finish a bit, two marks appeared. They almost look like stains but weren't visible before reducing the finish. Sanding seems to make them worse. Could these have been previous repairs and the presence of some kind of filler? There's grain there so I sort of doubted that. Not sure what to do about it but if you folks have any ideas... please let me know.

not sure I can help, but I'd say someone would be more likely to have an idea if you post a picture or two. :)

There is a guitar refinishing forum at Reranch.com/reranch . It will be the second forum on the list. Good Luck.

Hi matthewweisberg: very hard to say without seeing the instrument, but I wonder if in places you've gone through the lacquer to a sealer layer below, and what looks like stains is the difference between the two? Just one possibility.

If you cared to post a nice quality photo or two we might be able to help more.

Cheers - C

Contact your dealer ASAP.

Also, it's not polite to hi-jack someone elses thread.

I have the same thing! I've had it for a long time, but it's only on one section of my guitar (this is in response to the thread hi-jacker).

The funny thing is, MIM guitars (such as mine) are made from different pieces of wood. Solid body but they use different sections to compose the guitar.

I have those weird striations on just one section of my black tele.

Nothing to worry about I don't think, but if you find a fix, let me know :P

Probably just garbo wood.

Cheers

I've seen this in many older guitars. It comes from change in the wood and finish. I personally don't mind it with older guitars. In my mind it's like finding a well worn neck. When I can see the lines from from the wood it means, in my mind at least, a think skin of paint, and a good sounding body. Thick perfect finishes always sound dead to me. The well worn neck = a well loved and played often guitar.

When I see a used guitar that looks like it's fresh from the factory = never played and lived in the case. All of my Gibsons were like that. They looked brand new, while my Clapton Strat on the other hand looks good, but not mint.

Any ideas for Matthew...

I don't think you're supposed to sand on an acoustic finish. Maybe you should take the guitar to a qualified luthier for an opinion on that. Either way...quit sanding.

I don't think it's a big deal to hijack this thread... its not like the OP has posted in it for the last two months. The guy has an issue with the finish of his guitar, found a thread about finish issues, and posted in it. That actually seems pretty reasonable to me.

JMHO...

To juancarlosmarinh.

That's the Fender "thin finish" on the newer guitars. Fender says it allows the wood to "breath". I just think it saves them money on finishing a guitar properly. I have a 2008 with some lines like that also, but not as bad as yours. Contact an authorized Fender dealer ASAP.

My 3 mo. old FSR Am. Vtg. Ltd. Ed. '57 Stratocaster (thin nitro CAR) did the exact same thing.

Contacted Fender (Thanks Rob) and they had me take it to an Auth. Service Center for evaluation.

The consensus, that it was the wood, not a finish flaw. The Fender CS Rep. told me: " sometimes wood doesn't like being made into a guitar..."

Fender is replacing the body, but due to it being an FSR, it's upward of 90 days before they issue it to the Svc. Cntr.

The Svc. Cntr., - Hoffmans Handmade Guitars, speculated that the body was made immediately, but is being kept by Fender to insure 'stability' before shipping.

I believe Fender may be looking at this on a case-by-case basis, so I can't guarantee you'll get the same treatment I have.

cheers!

There is a Spanish forum, but it doesn't look to be used that much. Here:
http://forums.fender.com/viewforum.php?f=43

Pues, tranquilo juancar! My Spanish is a bit on the rusty side... me falta un monton de gramatica y vocabulario :), pero:

ASAP = as soon as possible = cuanto antes
como: llevar la guitarra cuanto antes a la tienda para evaluar lo

Highjack (on the internet) = interrumpir

¡Eso si que es! = S.O.C.K.S = los calcetines :D
