I'm going on a trip there in a month or so. Give me some good music stores/venues (if anyone good is playing) that I can check out. I'll be staying in Manhattan in Times Sq for 5 or 6 days.

Thanks.

The Mercury Lounge has good bands:

As far as music stores, I like Rivington Guitars and Matt Umanov; also Ludlow Guitars.

being such a fan of classic punk bands, you've got to go see what's left of CBGB while you're up there... I haven't heard anything in a while so I'm just assuming it's still some fancy designer clothing shop?
and go to the Chelsea Hotel for good measure. try to stay in Sid and Nancy's room.

this is from my own list of things I'd do if I ever went back to NY. :)

A good friend of mine (who I met at the first Misfits show I went to 3 years ago) was in Manhattan last month. He showed me pics of CBGB, and I almost don't want to visit it. It's a sacred location, and should be preserved, not turned into some shithead hipster's store.

I couldn't keep my composure if I went there.

I played at CBGB's. Max's Kansas City too. FWIW.
NYC. Manny's was the place to go in the day. 47th street, between 6th and 7th aves, is Music Alley. Bought my first bass, a Hofner club bass in a pawn shop there for 100.00. That was 1970.

Manny's is on 48th street (right across from where 48th Street Guitars used to be). Looks like Sam Ash is still on 48th....

Sorry to say this, but Manny's closed in 2009.
I loved that place. Hendrix and Clapton and most of the big hitters way back used to shop there. They had tons of memorabilia. I used to go to music row a few time a year just to hang out.

Manny's is now part of Sam Ash, call their toll free number: 866-PRO-MANNY

Does this mean the store front is still open?

It's not even close the the real Manny's. Sam Ash killed it from what some of my friends told me. I haven't gone back up since it closed, just another big box store. I have a Sam Ash five minutes from my house and it's actually way nicer. There were still some nice smaller shops around the row. Manny's was really a happening place in the 70's. I loved going there when I was a kid.

I'm more wondering if they have the memorabilia up still, I never bought a guitar at Manny before, I always went there to look at their stock of vintage stuff and the stuff on the walls.

Might as well get a Sam Ash shirt. I used to go there when guitars were used and not "vintage" Like I said, I haven't been back up to Manny's since the "acquisition". It's a shame because now it's just a store front that's kept up to look like Sam Ash has competition. Manny couldn't compete with Ash. If you live anywhere near the Philadelphia Pa area, Cintioli's Music is the place to get some smokin deals. Benny is still there. I bought lots of gear from him and he always had a better price than the big box stores. Don't know how he does it though.
