I'm getting a new amp since I sold my blues junior and I'm looking into a Fender all tube reissue. I tried solid states like Roland JC but I just don't enjoy the sound as much as tube. I have been researching for about a month and still can't decide between a Princeton Reverb Reissue or a Deluxe Reverb Reissue. I'll even consider a Blues Jr again or Hot Rod Deluxe. I'll be playing at home and recording mostly. I like the Princeton Reverb for the size/weight and the fact that there are 7 tubes compared to 9 in the Deluxe (cost to replace) not to mention the price. I just want to be extra sure in my decision so I don't wish I got the Deluxe or Hot Rod or Blues Jr. Does the Princeton have a better tone & more or the same volume as a Blues Jr? Is it worth it to get the Princeton Reverb or Deluxe over a Hot Rod or Blues Jr? Which amp is the overall better choice?

Have you personally played either of those two amps?

+1

Consider the guitar(s), the application(s), the acoustics, etc.

You may be happy with a Champ?

If I was facing this choice,I' pick the Deluxe Reverb-then again you may try it and find the sound hideous-let your ears be your guide.

I played the DRRI but very low cause I don't like turning up loud in Guitar Center.. Noone has a Princeton Reverb in stock. I'm leaning towards the Princeton because I like the Blues Jr and they have the same wattage, plus the fact it will be for home & recording use.. I've read the DRRI is pretty loud for home use, not sure though. I'm still saving up and since I have it narrowed down to those 2, I will try both, but ultimately I'm ordering it new online so the one I try won't be the one I buy. Any opinions on which amp is better for recording and just practicing at home?

A fool's errand.

I did do this before with an acoustic guitar and ended up wishing I got the one in store, The one I ordered was the same model but totally different as in worse quality, finish, and playability. I thought new in the box would be better, I was wrong. I'll wait until I see a PRRI in store then try it out. I still have awhile to go with saving $$$ so by the time I save maybe they'll get some PRRIs in stock at the Guitar Center or SamAsh.

I have bought the store demo units before.
1. Speaker is starting to get broken in.
2. You know it works right out of the box.
3. You know how it sounds.
4. You can get the store to cut some bucks on a demo unit. Stores like to rotate stock.
5. Your warranty is still 100% if it does break right away.

I think the SCX2 clean channel is amazing. It has a 10" speaker. The Princeton offers tube tremelo and reverb. How much more will it cost you to have these effects? There are tremelo boxes that are amazing and reverb boxes that give you an astounding selection. Bragging rights and purity issues aside, I feel the SCX2 is a great amp at a great price. Even if you never use the DSP channel. Compared to what I have with my super champ the Princeton is over priced to me. Fender knows its market and knows that emotional make-up of its market. They pay people big bucks to know their customers. Those people can even afford custom shop equipment.

I just put a 10" Eminence Red Fang Alnico speaker in my SCX2. A stock Fender Princeton would run and hide from this amp. A Stock Deluxe would only have a slight volume edge. The RF has a 102 dB rating. My Super Champ is a tone beast now.

I actually picked up a Fender Super 60. I'm happy with it, the specs are "half a twin" + a semi ok distortion gain channel. I was looking at a SCX2 and even watching videos never played one though... I'll play one next time I visit guitar center. Who knows, I might return the Super 60 if I like the SCX2 better...

Every time I ever bought gear online there was something bad about the experience and I'd swear it was the last time I'd do it. Eventually it sunk in. Nowadays I refuse to buy guitars or amps online. If I find a pedal I like and the price is better online and I don't mind waiting, I'll do it but never again with a guitar or amp.

RJ's "Fool's Errand" comment was putting it nicely and showed remarkable restraint. Any comment I might have to share would have every second word censored. (ie: %^$@!)

Take these 3 words to heart:

Don't
Do
It

The last two amps I bought on line I built myself.
Seriously, if at all possible, avoid buying an amp on line and try it out with you own guitar before you leave the store. By the way, the Princeton is light years away from scx2, no comparison. Has nothing to do with bragging rights. it has to do with build quality and pure analog tone. Between the two, IMHO,
the DRRI is better for gigging, the Princeton is great for recording.
