The generally accepted theory 'over there' is that the angle of the headstock in relation to the neck is too sharp. Notice the 2 pictures I posted above show the exact same break angle in the exact same place.

Add to that the nice rout they have in the front for Truss rod access. He's right though about maple being stronger. Gibson also offers a SG in maple now and plugs that feature.

most of the angled ones seem t snap on the glue joint. it would naturally be weak there as its not 1 piece of wood like fender necks are.

All the Gibsons I own are one piece necks, the scarfed joints are usually on epiphones. The only wood they add to the necks are on the headstock to get that wide Gibson look, if not the headstocks basically a melody maker width. I know on some certain new and older models the neck is up to 3 pieces but on their standards ,juniors , and studios they are all one piece. The faded are 1 piece.

The one piece necks are usually quarter-sawn wood too!

The 2012 SG Standard has the perfect neck; quarter-sawn, fat, rigid, stable.

Negligence and carelessness is what causes the headstocks to break on the Gibsons. I've never broken one in over 45 years. Fender uses string trees to get the break angle that needed instead of a joint. Be careful and you'll be fine.

can't argue with that supro, if you're always careful, it should never be a problem. :D
