I know this is the Fender lounge, but I am in need of a new guitar, made in the USA, that is light, and is something I can afford (I am 14 and it took me a year to save up $500). I heard that the SG is one of the lightest guitars out there, and I am also a Doors fan (Robby Krieger plays an SG) so why not?

Anyway, do any of you guys have any experience with this guitar? If you do, can you share your experiences with it? Thanks.

ive had a few sgs over the years . my current one is an epiphone. yeah there light. compared to a les paul. a gibson for 500 your doing well if you can find one at that price. anyhow there nice guitars youll like it if you do get one.

The SG's are light and the high-side strap button located on the heel of the neck takes a while to acclimate to (the guitar has a tendency to feel neck-heavy), but they're pretty solidly built and with a decent set of pickups and controls, sound pretty good.

They do have one little stress point which can be a problem if you're not careful...

This goes for Gibson Les Pauls too. You can't really call it a 'design flaw' because they don't just spontaneously snap off, but you do have to be careful about bumping/dropping these guitars.

Any instrument subjected to neglect or abuse could suffer a similar fate. I've owned over a dozen Gibsons in the last forty years, including five at this very moment, and never had a castastrophic issue such as that occur. You shouldn't have dropped your guitar.

while ive seen this happen in photos ive never had it happen to me on anybrand guitar. and ive had some drop to the floor or slip sideways when leaned against an amp.

as to the heavy neck yes true thats because of the neck length vs body thickness.

what i did with mine was move the strap button on the neck end and off set it some to the higher side.

Try this with a Gibson SG, I bet he wouldn't have been playing the same guitar at the end of the song:

Specifically: http://youtu.be/QMW0t17Ft5o?t=3m42s

P.S. I didn't drop my guitar, those aren't my pictures. I spent a good deal of time over at the Gibson forum. Trust me, it comes up way more often over there than it does over here.

Here's a real story from the Gibson forum:

Yesterday, I balanced my SG-3 in his case against a wall without really paying attention how I put it there, and it fell over. This resulted in the headstock being completely torn off. Raging right now? Well you could put it that way.
Should I send it back to the usa or have it repaired here? I know a couple of places that does excellent repairs, but I have no idea if this can be repaired properly or if I should have the entire neck completely replaced. Any advice would be great!
It's a sad day for humankind...

yeah it does seem to be a problem with that type of neck joint. i see those on ebay alot under fix it or guitar cheap for repair. for the most part though there epiphones not gibsons.. and id attribute that to poor manufacturing in china

some of it could be due to handling in shipping. for example i looked at an ej200 with the lower back all busted . couldnt tell till i picked it up off the stand at guitar center... it should have been sent to the wood pile.

as to strats . yeah mine has taken a share of bumps with no problems. but hey either way you should try to take some care with your valuables . just my opinion though.

hes really not being as abusive to that guitar as it may seem btw. although ill say this i agree that a strat is able to take more of a beating than an sg.. but then again why would you want to do that to your guitar in the first place. keep in mind both hendrix and srv had plenty of techs to fix up there guitars...the average preson does not.

I've owned alot of Gibsons, three currently. One of my faded SGs neck did snap at the headstock, only after I neglected it by putting it in a soft case in my trunk with my Evil Twin amp! Needless to say the amp fell over on the neck and I was a sad boy. BUT it was MY FAULT! Sure if you neglect it can and WILL happen.

I learned my lesson at 16, now at 27 I make sure to take absolute care of ALL my guitars. If I'm not playing them they are cased in a hardshell LAYING on its side, never end over end (standing up). I have seen to many gits get harmed that way.

Rule of thumb, these are not just guitars they are artwork to me so I take Amazing care of them.

Side note, the percentages of snapped headstocks matches the percentage of players that dont take Necessary precautions. I understand that accidents still do happen to those who do as I do, but after hearing time and time again stories about how it happened more times than most it was due to neglect. JMO

Yep agreed, it is pretty much always some sort of stupidity that leads to a broken headstock.

I think the point I'm trying to make is a guitar like a Fender Strat (for example) can generally take a little more stupidity without breaking than an SG.

Is the reason because mahogany is not as strong as maple?

The generally accepted theory 'over there' is that the angle of the headstock in relation to the neck is too sharp. Notice the 2 pictures I posted above show the exact same break angle in the exact same place.

ive never got on with them. the thin body to me feels cheap and doesnt make me feel like im a rock god

also, they dont just feel neck heavy. they ARE neck heavy. admittedly ive not played loads, but the 3 or 4 i have tried all dipped down neck to floor, unless i had a superwide/grippy strap on. sitting down and playing wasnt a huge problem though.

not something i would ever spend money on.

Found this picture:

This is what headstock angle is. the top one is the Fender model where the angle is created by lowering the face of the headstock as opposed to actually angling the headstock itself. One of these will break more easily.
