So, Yoda... just how far away from Marshfield, MA is this "galaxie far away"? I've got all my equipment set up downstairs, I'm not looking to tour the world, I'm way past trying to be a rock star, I'm a self-proclaimed RHYTHM guitar player, and I just wanna jam. I live where I work, so I'm always here.

I've always found that keeping a band going -- especially for people who are out in the "real world" with full-time jobs and families -- can be really tough. It's hard to work around different schedules, varying levels of free-time and commitment. And if just one member of the band isn't pulling their own weight, the whole thing falls apart.

I agree that the best thing to do would be to post your own ad describing what you're trying to do and see what kind of response you get. You may have to work your way through a few "flakes" before you get to the right people, but eventually you may find some guys (or gals) with whom you might click.

Dang, Frankie...I wish I was close to you, LOL...

Also, much respect for declaring right away that you're a rhythm player...I have no problem playing rhythm behind someone else (whether they're a better lead player than me or not) but it's becoming rarer and rarer to find someone who will willingly take that role.

...it's also harder and harder to find people who know how to jam/play with someone else. So many people have learned to play with amazing technique and have blazing skill and licks, but have only learned these things in a "solo" (as in playing by themselves to YouTube clips) setting and have no idea how to play within the dynamics of a good band.

That is something that concerns me... that learning on my own for too long will make it difficult to get together and jam with others.

I'm starting 1-on-1 lessons next week at a small local music school. The staff Bios are encouraging with all being gigging musicians, several who do regular studio work and most with a music degree. I received a pre-paid block of 6 lessons as a gift and once we see how that works, the school offers 'memberships' in the form of larger pre-paid blocks of lessons. One of the advantages is that they have a performance room - stage, lights, PA, Mix board, assortment of amps, etc. The members can go any time and jam with other students, so if all goes well, I may get started there. I suspect there will be lots of much younger people, which I think is a good thing.

cheers!

I just want to play, but I don't think I want to chase after this guy. I was approched, so if he wants me in on his project, he'll have to get back in touch with me. I also left a phone message that never was returned, so back to square one.

I live on the planet Hoth, otherwise known as Saskatchewan, Canada. Massachusetts is a long way from home, but I'd jump at the offer if I was closer.

Yeah, to clarify..around here...I mean my city and flakes are people who say one thing and then never follw through...ie flaking out.
Its a real pain because I have tried to jam so many times and you get alot of people who talk the talk, but they don't walk the walk, you know what I'm sayin'?
Even people I've been friends with for a while flake out on me all the time.

I think you are right to call them flakes when they say they can do it and then don't follow through. Substantively, I think people are too busy with the demands of life. I avoid being a flake by--sadly--not committing to anything in the first place. I really wish I had a drummer and bassist friend or two with whom to jam, but I know I don't have time to commit to regular practice times. In fact, I do have some friends who play guitar, yet we never get together. This is not some kind of lazy "I don't have time" that a 14 year old kid would say, even though said kid has no responsibilities whatsoever and spends 6 hours a day watching TV and playing video games. I do MAKE time to practice. I fight to find an average of 40 minutes to an hour a day to practice, alone, in my home, either early in the morning or at night, after spending time with my kids. And I don't consider it practice; it's fun. I'd play 6 hours a day if I could. What I don't have time for is to commit to driving somewhere to meet others--who, invariably, will be at least 30 minutes late--and practice there, after wasting an hour or two in driving time there and back and setup time and time wasted because others were late. So I don't bother to answer any craigslist ads about forming bands or jam sessions. I just can't imagine having the time to do it in my life right now. Which sucks. I would love to be able to jam with and learn from others.
