Why are musicians, at least the ones around here (my city), a bunch of flakes. I haven't been in a band for over 4 years, and each time I speak with someone about jamming, thats as far as it goes. No one ever follows through. Just before Christmas, someone I haven't spoken to in years contacts me and asks if I would like to be part of his project. We discuss our available time, and I say lets do it. That was the last time I spoke with him.
What gives? I am a busy guy too, but I can make time. If your not into it anymore, let me know, so I don't sit and wonder!

At first I thought that with "around here" you meant the forum.

I'm not familiar with the term "flakes" (I think cereal in that case, ha ha ha) but I understand it as meaning "unreliable"?

Well, I'm presently forming a bluesrock band and I have the same problems.

Narrowminded & blindfolded ("I only play Rolling Stones on my acoustic"),
lazy ("what??? 2 rehearsals a week?????"),
unprofessional ("why should I re-master our live DVD which was recorded with our cheap digi cam with internal mike?? It's live!!"),
strange ("yes, I want to play in your bluesrock band but could we do a little more jazz or funk??"),
confused ("why don't you better play in our rock band? We play covers like Stones, Marillion, Police, Madonna, Seal..."  ),
overconfident ("I've been playing drums for 10 years..." but couldn't keep the same speed during a song and had never heard about TIMING!!),
showoffs ("I played rock and blues and was the lead gitarist in my Stones cover band!" but couldn't even improvise a simple 12 bar blues in E, not to speak of having no friggin' clue about in which key he's playing his solo! He played a mixture of A & G over the improvised blues in E)....

I think it's a general development in modern society. With decreasing education, increasing laziness and decreasing social behavior everything goes down the drain with it!

Yeah, to clarify..around here...I mean my city and flakes are people who say one thing and then never follw through...ie flaking out.
Its a real pain because I have tried to jam so many times and you get alot of people who talk the talk, but they don't walk the walk, you know what I'm sayin'?
Even people I've been friends with for a while flake out on me all the time.

I think, people just don't care as much anymore as they used to.
It goes through all kinds of branches/topics/areas.

Obviously people you can actually RELY on get less and less nowadays.

The new motto of todays life seems to be: max output with the least possible input. Max win by the least effort possible.
If it takes too much effort (in case of some people this means "if I actually have to move my body") forget about it.

A lot of talking, no action.
A lot of wannabes.
A lot of dreamers

We (the society) seem to turn into a lazy, stupid, degenerated bunch of first grade school leavers who rather let their dreams die instead of getting their fat a**** moving.

There's still lots of exceptions to these people but I somehow get the feeling that they get less and less each year, followed by those who just don't give a sh****.
Discipline??? What the heck is THAT???

I kinda feel familiar with both of you guys' experiences . Now I am not quite sure if I am in a band, but we are some guys in various age , decent players - who plays really well together , but I feel this is going to vanish in the air  If we only could put up a new rehearsal.......

These observations are mine as well. I have been in bands since 1967. Had my first paid gig then too, at age 14. Watch a TV or serious movie from that period and do the same now and much of the answer lies there. If I say more some will call me a conspiracy theorist.

I read a short interview with a guy who has been working at Eminence for the last 13 years. He comments about how hard it is to find anybody with a work ethic anymore.

I think part of the problem is getting older.

In my younger days it was easy to get a band going. Anybody that had a job wasn't too concerned about losing it. Our weekends were generally ours.

Now, it's a lot harder because people I know have real jobs and families. The weekends are for family time or running errands. Priorities have changed.

Hey Smokin', I've been on the other side of this one - jumping up and down saying "if everyone was doing their homework, we wouldn't need to rehearse 4-5 times in a month!". Lazy indeed!

Yeah, it could be the fact of getting older. Although I have not contacted any of these type of ads, I see lots posted for people looking for band members in their late teens and early 20's. I do not fall into this category. The other ads I see are people looking to conquer the rock and roll world by rehearsing 3 times a week and going on tour. I cannot do either of these.
All I'm looking for is to jam once a week or every two weeks and gig once and a while. My last band was like that and I'd like to find the same.

I couldn't be in a band if I wanted. Just no time at this point in my life. Therefore I don't commit to something and then "flake out". That's just rude.

I'm sure the "Flakes" mean well and are even sincere when they talk it up. It's just that they're flakes, so don't waste any anger on them.

Well, I'd say keeping an existing program running in an experienced band, no problem.
We are starting right now, don't know each other and lots of covers we haven't played yet.
So I think 1 to 2 times a week is minimum to get a 30 song set done in a reasonable time.

Once all is set and there's maybe one new song every once in a while and we're experienced in playing together, then it will be much less of course.

The last band I was in, the drummer was notorious for not learning his parts. I remember so many times coming to rehersal and someone says "lets try this song". Then the drummer always says "which one is that? How does it go? Let me listen to it."

You might try posting your own ad spelling out exactly what you're looking for just as you've done here...

Be sure to post it in Music stores too...

You might be surprised how many other people are having the same difficulty and looking for the same thing you are.

Good Luck !

cheers!

Unfortunately i find the majority of musicians to be over sensitive, Vain, flaky and generally quite lacking in backbone and sincerity, with some exceptions!!! That's going to win me a heap of friends around here i know, But here in OZ it's as true as the suns coming up in the morning. I don't really associate with Muso's for this exact reason. Too many are hard luck, Poor me, unlucky, Did't quite make it type's that are bitter at the world and rude people with gigantic chips on their shoulders because of it. I think a lot of them miss the true meaning of music once they think they can make money out of it. It becomes work and here in this country for 99.99% of people who make it a career its a dead end job with no future and low pay. I believe to the core of my being if you rocket out of high school with a band that is making a huge impact and you stay in that band and it starts attracting nation wide attention then great, your on the road to being the 001% to make a good living out of it, I know so many people who honestly still think at 35 plus their big break is coming and they are so vain, arrogant and deluded its not funny its sad. Chill out its just a hobby and always will be, Your not a rock star, You did't miss your chance, enjoy music and stop being a little princess harden up and get a job and stop feeling sorry for yourself because your not fleetwood mac.  And so i totally get it, Trying to play music with these people is just ridiculas, Your just there for some fun and beers and their trading cattle stations with peanuts and getting all emotional about it, Sad way to be huh. I'll stick to blues jams thanks..... :|

I've run into quite a few of the "flake" types over the years who are so self absorbed and wrapped up in themselves and their own little clique that they think that anyone outside of their own Inner Sanctum isn't worthy. These guys are in their own little world and are really aren't worth you wasting your time trying to talk to them or worse trying to understand what makes them tick because they are always space cadets and are far beyond figuring out.
