I am looking to buy a new speaker for my SCX2. The Ragin Cajun is a big favorite. It is very reasonably priced. WGS has its 10" G10C that they claim has a warmer sound and more depth in the tone. I believe them and this would probably be a good choice. I have heard little bits of the Red Fang in you tube clips and it seems to have something extra. Billy Penn had a RC in his Super Champ and then put a red fang in. He said he won't day the RF is better then the RC but it is different and he will be living with the RF for the foreseeable future. I have heard some short clips with it cranked and it seems to be a what I like for both crunch and clean. Still, the chance to really hear one has been limited. The RF like most alnicos is around 200 dollars when bought wisely. 250+ is at the regular online stores. I am hoping to see if some here have an opinion, good or bad, about this speaker. Once bought, I own it. Even if I don't love or like it.

Thanks to anyone who might be able to help here.

I'm guessing the red fang is not a popular speaker.

I am really leaning towards getting the Red Fang. A good alnico has an articulation all its own. I guess tomorrow when I place my order, it will become obvious to me which one I chose. If I do get it, a report will follow.

I'll put it here Matt.

I am going to post this review in a thread or two.

I just put an Eminence Red Fang 10" speaker in my SCX2 today. Wow! The transformation is astounding and I still have the stock tubes. The tonal spectrum and 102 dB sensitivity of this speaker have made it a 12" amp. I rolled through the voices of channel two, but with the exception of the 65 Deluxe, they were all nothing compared to the clean channel with this speaker. With the alnico speaker even the Vox voices sound like my clean channel. Right now, I feel like I got the equivalent of a Princeton+/Deluxe- amp for the price of the SCX2, plus the speaker. My cool cat tremelo pedal made my telecaster middle position sound like George Harrison on "I Need You". With a house full of people, cranking it up has not happened yet, but even at low volumes the punchy, clean bass notes and shimmering chimey highs are apparent. The mid is balanced and does not sound scooped.

I heard the Celestion alnicos and they lacked good bottom end for my ear. Eminence Red Fang from Kentucky is an amazing speaker.

If you are intrigued, contact Dave at Avatar speakers for the best price.

BTW. Musicians friend is having a sale on sets of 12" speakers. They have a Barkin' Blues set with a Red Fang and a Wizard for 256.00. The Red Fangs sell for 249.99 alone. Now these are the 50 watt versions and the ones in the set are the 30 watt versions. I read an article by an Eminence person that said there is no difference between these two speakers and that the numbers had to do with marketing. The Barkin' Blues set is like getting the Wizard for free. Alnicos and ceramics break up differently and have different kinds of harmonics. I would guess these two speakers in a cab are amazing, unless one likes the darker tones without having to use amp EQ.I am going to post this review in a thread or two.

Are you going to try it through your Bug? I figured it would sound awesome, how can it not with a name like "Red Fang".

Yes I will. The EL84 tube in it should be a natural with the Alnico. Although, I think the 6V6's make the Alnicos sound nice and beefy without losing any chimey-ness.

Hooked the Bug up to it. A waste of a great speaker on it, IMO I keep the Bug tone dimed. Anything else chokes the tonal spectrum. All control is from the guitar and fingers. I love that. However, I think the 6v6 is a superior tube than the EL84 for my tastes. The Bug does old school primitive real well, IMO. The Fender SCX2 clean channel is an amazing piece of sound. Many have commented on this. Pedals sing through it. The Red Fang brings out the harmonic richness that is possible from this amp and channel. Channel two is very handy and welcome and deep tweaking will unlock some amazing tones. The speaker cab sims are one of the gems of Fuse.

For now, I am finding the clean channel, my Danelectro cool cat tremelo and a hint of hall reverb with light delay are providing sounds that I am loving. My Amer.Standard Tele and Studio LP are also tone machines that are coming alive with this set up. Just strumming chords with different intensities and percussion and then listening to the harmonics in the decays is ear candy.
