I got so used to using my nails or fingertips if I broke one that nowadays the whole idea seems like an exercize in futility. (I also learned a lot about nail hardeners from my daughter  )

Ha - I've used more of Mrs C's nail repair products than she has!

By the way, next time Jeff Beck is on your screen check out the thumbnail on his picking hand. And then recall that when he's not playing he spends his time working on the engines of his souped up cars. There's a gentleman who's spent a lot of time repairing his nails, I'll bet!

Cheers - C

Always pick and fingers, Richard Thompson style. Never understood how people can play guitar using their fingernails and those plastic/metal fingerpicks just don't agree with me.

Don't understand how anyone can use nails on steel string guitar, the steel wears them away to hell  nylon string yes 'cos it's not as wearing, but not on steel strings.

Whoever uses their nails must have strong nails.

Moot point anyway nowadays for me as i can't fingerpick worth anything nowadays with a dystonic right hand

Exactly! That's why there's always fingernail dust on my strings and guitar surfaces
Seriously, though...my fingernails must be pretty solid as I only use my hands (nails and pads) when I play.
I'm sorry to hear about your dystonia, Gorgon...I hope it gets better and sooner rather than later.
cheers....
