I don't think it's bones, so much as joints, maybe? A lot of what I do causes me to stretch my fingers most of the time. (all powerchords.)

My hands are both the same size and this question sounded absurd to me.... but google produced this:

Quote:
A lot of what gives a part of the body its size is muscle mass, and if you exercise the muscles in one hand or arm more than the other, it may be slightly larger. For example, it is common for people to have slightly more strength (and size) in their dominant hand, especially if they work with their hands a lot. Hormonal problems are unlikely. These tend to cause over all problems with the size of the body and they wouldn't typically affect just one part of the your body, such as your hand. If you take a close look at your entire body and notice that the asymmetry is not limited just to your hand but also extends to the rest of that side of your body, this could be a condition that is known as hemihypertrophy. You should see your doctor for an evaluation to be on the safe side. In adulthood, hemihypertrophy is a fairly benign condition. However, as there is a higher risk of certain types of cancers, it should be evaluated. You do not have hemihypertrophy, however, if the size discrepancy is just your hand.

From the thread posted above:
Quote:
So I looked at my hands. I've been playing for over 30 years now and if I line up the my wrists and the bootom of my hands palm to palm, my left hand fingers are 1/2 inch longer than my right hand fingers. I thought that my fingers were longer , but looking again, my fingers are the same size on both hands. But my left hand from my wrist to my fingers is actualy 1/2 inch larger

The Body can respond to stresses put on it.

Most Major League Pitchers for example have a greater bone density in their pitching arm than their catching arm. Though usually slight, it is measureable.

You are young and so your body is much more likely to respond than older people. People my age (and really after 35) generally lose bone mass at a certain percentage per year, though using your fingers in playing will reduce the degree of loss, as would any excercise.

The length issue I'm not so certain of though. The individual finger bones aren't likely to lengthen so much as they are to increase in density.

What could happen is that the tendons in your fretting hand may have stretched causing the space between the individual bones to 'loosen up'.

Or, it may just be an illusion.

cheers!

One thing I found, years ago was I could do hand stretching exercises anywhere I wanted and to make them more interesting, I'd put 2 small objects (like salt and pepper shakers ) on a flat surface and force them apart with one hand, using my thumb and pinky , trying to push them just a tiny bit further each time I spread my hand

Over the years, I have found out I can now do the "splits" with my left hand (bet you're all having a go now!) and get 90% of my palm , flat on the table , with my thumb and pinky very nearly in a straight line

This helps loads and strengthens your pinky no end, but don't force it , just do it gently till you have stretched your hand a bit

Good news is you were probably not genetically engineered in a lab. If each side of your body was exactly the same, that would be cause for alarm. Or maybe you were genetically enhanced and made this way to throw all the scientist off. Yes, a genetically enhanced rock machine sent back in time with aspirations of rock world domination. It is you. You're the one.
