So I recently bought a Fender '65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue....and absolutely love it. However, over the weekend I noticed a slight hiss (not your normal "idle" hiss) when playing notes or chords.

It's rather quiet, but I'm still hearing it. I'm by no means an expert on the electronics of an amp and the tubes and whatnot and was hoping someone could help me out here. I've included a 5 second clip where the hiss can be heard following the note being played.

Any suggestions?

I am sure you would get a reply if this was posted in the right forum.

This encompasses all things Fender, correct? Which forum would be more appropriate?

Sorry to say but one of your tubes is on the way out....try reseating them all, but I think your gonna need a new one by the sounds of it....do you know how to do a check on each individual tube?

No I don't. And is it common for new amps to come with shotty tubes? Certainly this is nothing to return an amp for, correct? Seems simple enough to have fixed, and often times ive found by returning something with a minor issue, you'll get something with an even bigger problem. Haha

If its brand new and still has warranty, I would take it back and have it checked. I wouldnt pay over 500.00 and try to fix it myself, thats what warranty is for

Well it wouldn't be $500 to replace a tube right? If its a simple fix, I'd rather not deal with guitar center...they're a headache with that sort of thing.

The AMP forum would be appropriate. But then you already posted there also.

I was just saying why pay for something that is covered under warranty, why fork out alot of money for a brand new amp and then pay for a repair when its still in the warranty period, just sayin :D

It's slight. Not really that noticeable. However it is there i can definitely hear it in the clip.

When did you buy it? If it's under warranty get it back to the shop and make them look it over. It could be a tube and most probably is as they're the number 1 problem when faults come up. But equally it could be a problem with a resistor or component on the board inside the chassis.

I wouldn't let the shop off, i'd make them scratch their head and do the work, you shouldn't have to.

Most probably a tube change will fix it, but you shouldn't have to do it

If you're set on fixing it yourself then get a good output tube the same type as in the amp and replace each output tube in turn. When you remove the output tube and the noise go's away that's the problem tube. Same thing with preamp tubes; get yourself a known good tube the same type as in your Twin and replace each preamp tube one at a time.

Don't open up the amp under any circumstances yourself, as you can expose yourself to deadly high voltages and, if you touch the wrong place in the circuit, you can electrocute yourself!!!!

When replacing output tubes: don't touch them with your bare hands, without a period of cooldown, as they become hot, really hot. Turn the amp off before replacing those.

Gorgon makes very good points regarding Safety.

Another point... don't touch the tubes with your bare hands. Similar to a Halogen bulb, any skin oil that is left on the tube is gonna create a 'hotspot' and can reduce the tube's service life.

While I'm not that well versed in Guitar Amps, I've owned McIntosh Tube Amplifiiers (currently an MC275) for more than 30 years...

cheers!

Old wive's tale/Internet "truth"/plain old BS. Take your pick.

Halogen bulbs operate at a much higher temperature than vacuum tubes. That is why they are made of quartz glass instead of silica glass like vacuum tubes. Touching a vacuum tube does no harm to the glass. It is true that a dirty/dusty tube may not dissipate heat as well, but skin oils will not cause a "hot spot".

Although, I guess that there are people that eat fried chicken or ribs while changing tubes.

Just posted on the vintage amp forum. But this reminds me of Stratele's comment about equipment connected to the house AC system(ie. fluorscent lights, dimmers, computers, etc.). I use an isolated ground filter with a stand alone reverb unit and sometimes with my old tube amps, when I suspect AC power supply problems. Just sayin' .... Art
