So not long ago, a friend of mine (who knows nothing about the blues) asked me what would be my three album recommendations to him, so he could start exploring the genre with a push in the right direction, instead of trying to buy stuff by himself for the first time. So I told him that three albums only is a very restrictive first contact, and there is everything he needs to know on youtube. But after some talking, I realized that he needed some "guidance" or the "this is the good stuff" attitude, so he could start from there. At that time, we were at the end of a meeting, he had to leave in a rush and I had no time to think twice about this list, so this is what I came up with.

B.B. King, Live at the Regal.
Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble greatests hits.
Ronnie Earl, Hope Radio.

It was not a top three list, but three top musicians, with three slightly different genres, coming from three different decades. Nothing to do about who's the best but instead, good stuff to start with. Someday, when he'll have gathered himself some Blues education, he'll dig into the obscure and talented bluesmen of the past, this is not what he needs right now. So being in the same situation, what would you recommend to a friend?

Three blues albums that I consider indispensable are: 1. Howlin Wolf-London Sessions 2.Muddy Waters-Hard Again 3.The 2 former selections are my absolute favourites but as for picking a 3rd I just can't because there are so many albums that just blow me away, such as: Mike Bloomfield-It's Not Killing Me, anything by Lightnin' Hopkins,Sonny Boy Williamson,Son House,Memphis Slim,Buddy Guy,T-Bone Walker,ROBERT JOHNSON, Willie Dixon,Leadbelly,Elmore James and of course Albert,Freddie,B.B. and Earl King. There are so many other greats that don't come to the top of my head at the moment, which is just as well as there wouldn't be enough room or time tonight to write them all down.

For someone just beginning to explore the genre, buying a bunch of individual CDs can run into quite alot of $$ only to end up with a pretty narrow exposure.

That's why I would suggest some compilation CDs from various labels. This lets you experience many different artists for very little money. I would HIGHLY recommend the various Anniversary Collections from Alligator Records:

25th Anniversary Collection:

30th Anniversary Collection:
http://www.alligator.com/albums/Alligat ... ollection/

40th Anniversary Collection:

Also, check out their Budget Albums page:

cheers!

Purposely avoiding "Greatest Hits" albums here, I would recommend the following discs to a blues newbie (a bluesbie? :? )...I chose these because they are not "hard to love/appreciate albums" like some of my favorites (Hound Dog Taylor, Son House, etc.)

Muddy Waters--"Muddy 'Mississippi' Waters Live"
Fabulous Thunderbirds--"What's The Word" or "Girls Go Wild" or "Butt Rockin'"
Freddie King--"Texas Cannonball"

Some Blues Albums I listen to again & again, in no particular order:

1. Fleetwood Mac in Chicago (no this is not a joke... check it out)

2. Buddy Guy: Living Proof

3. B.B. King: Live at the Cook County Jail

4. Jimi Hendrix: Blues

5. Jimmy Rodgers All Stars: Blues, Blues, Blues

6. Luther Allison: Blue Streak

7. Boogaloo Joe Jones

Just a brief list from my over 3,500 Blues LP & CD treasure.

cheers!

A little more modern, but nice and bluesy.
