It's possible that in my situation, it's an amp/pickup combo. I only have one bass preamp. It's a very good one, but when tweaking the knobs, the midranges aren't very prominent. Something that I'm reading about when researching on the net, and experiencing on hand concerning an Alembic F-1X.

The pickups in the RBX170 bass seem to be filling that void. It is possible that in another setup it would be considered too mid heavy. I'm not experiencing any muddiness or distortion out of them (which is pleasing) and the mids are cutting through clean. The Ultra Jazz pickups seem to lack mids, and in this amp, I don't think that's a good thing. It could very well be that Ultra Jazz pickups are perfectly fine with other amps. Same thing, no mud, but they're lacking in power and mids, and it doesn't agree with this amp.

For THIS amp, the stock Yamaha sound much better. I think that before I try buying new pickups for the Samick, I'm gonna put in the stocks with new pots and cap and see if I get the same results as the Yamaha.

That makes sense. Do they make a mid boost for bass? I guess a EQ before the F-1X would do it.

Anyone else here experience any similar experiences with " lower end" gear before?

My first guitar amp, which I still own and play, is one of those little unexpected gems that pop up once in a blue moon. Its a cheap solid state 10W amp that you have to push as hard as she could possibly take, but what you get back is something special. I have a fancy 'boutique' point-to-point handwired AC15 that I love to turn up when nobodys home, but when the folks are present, I have no problem playing my little practice amp in the bedroom. It's nice to see the good in the simple things (and everything else, for that matter).

Yea they're out there. There's a certain amount of variety I'm looking for. My Ibanez kills all in this amp for smooth rich bass tones. But there are instances where I want a good passive raw sound. Although the Ultra Jazz pickups are certainly different and add to the variety, I just don't find them very useful with this amp for me. I could eq it, I did eq it, but I think it's a hard fight to add a quality to something that doesn't already have it. If I roll off the treble, I'm left with more of a reggae feel in that its all bass, but not to the degree of the Ibanez. The active Barts are the best reggae pickups I've ever heard.

If the Samick experiment doesn't work, I might consider trying a hot Fender, Duncan or Bartolini set. But I'm pretty sure ill be selling the Ultra Jazz set. Not feeling it.
