Just would like to know if anybody else is crazy for block inlays??

And why does Fender make so few guitars with block inlays??

They have basses with block inlays and there's many Jazzmasters and Jaguars with block inlays but I hardly see strats or teles with them.

I know the "The Ventures Signature" models but that's pretty much about it.

So, what do you guys think about block inlays in strats and teles?

I think they might look good on some Fenders like Jags and Jazzmasters if tastefully done (no mother of toilet seat please), like some manufacturers. On Strats and Teles blocks would look out of place, but that's just me.

On a Jag, JM, or even a bass ok...but not on a Strat or Tele. That would be like putting Martins Hexagon inlays on a Les Paul...would look totally out of place. But then I am an old fashioned kind of guy.

+1

Where it's historically appropriate, they look great. On certain of the "new" models (like the Jaguar Bass) they're fine. But for Strats and Teles, they're totally out of character. Like putting 20-inch alloys on a '65 GTO......

I'm not a big fan of inlays - especially block inlays - and given a choice I would prefer a fretboard without position markers on its face.

What I think would look really "sharp" and way cooler than a block inlay, would be some of that beautiful sharpie magic you've shown us on the body going all the way up the fretboard.

Cheers!

20" alloys on a '65 GTO?....perish the thought!!!I agree with Arjay, block fret markers would look completely out of place on a Strat or Tele.About the only Strat I ever saw that looked good with non-standard dot inlays was the 70th (?) Ann. BRG Strat that was made for Jaguar Cars-it had jaguar silhouette where each marker should be and was one of the most visually striking Strats ever made.Alain La France has a beautiful example of one of the very limited edition of about 40 that were presented mostly to Jaguar executives.

I prefer playing on a predominantly wooden fingerboard as opposed to a predominantly plastic one.

As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.

I have always loved block inlays. My uncles 69 black beauty is the guitar that still haunts my dreams. That being said I think that although there are tons of manufacturers out there with them, block inlays to me ultimately scream Gibson. Jazz Bass has them and it absolutely works but I am with others that say a tele or strat would look off with block inlays. I am a sucker for all sorts of exotic inlays on the fretboard as long as they are not too busy. I love the inlays on my Taylor 614, they are different but not gaudy or overly complex.

Okay, seems like the block inlay lovers are a minority with Fender guitars.

I always wanted to have one, so I put one together with a custom ordered Warmoth neck.

I know, I've shown it before, but here it is again, my "Rockbitch":

I guess it depends on guitar and owner taste. However, I like only natural materials if it is going to be a block inlays. I love the abalone on my Ibanez Artcore guitar.
