I have a partsocaster EXACTLY like the one on the far left in the picture you posted in the Hendrix strings thread. I bought all the parts off Ebay, the body was pre-cut and contoured, I sanded and grain-filled it and had a pro put a natural finish and some clear coat, i soldered all the electronics and set it up. It plays pretty good if I do say so myself.Image

i absolutely love the natural finish. the dark pick guard is a nice touch and i'm not big on cosmetics. i rebuilt an old explorer and left it "naked" and it actually worked when i was finished. my finish is not even close to being "nice" but its "naked" just the same. one pickup and one volume knob.
its my favorite guitar and plays effortlessly.

It came out alot better than i thought it would. The body is Swamp Ash, the neck is a Mighty Mite, and the pickups are Alnico 3s, and the whole guitar is heavy, makes my Les Paul feel light. The cost kinda got away from me though, I could have bought a used American Strat for what i spent on this build, I guess it is an American Strat if you really think about it.

Hiya.
I built a guitar up from parts I had lying around way back in the early 90s. Before I sprayed the body, I 'nailed' it all together to see how it sounded ('see' sound???)...
It was unbelievable... it was kind of 'alive'. Notes sustained and then came back with a second wind... It was never the same after spraying. Like I say it was just junk I had lying around. I keep promising myself that one day I'll buy a good body and neck and do it again, except with no finish next time, just oil it.

they applied a natural color stain to bring out the grain and then clearcoated it

Cool guitar MG, I put a Mighty Mite neck on a p-bass and thought it is nicer than the stock neck that I accidently broke
