I use them sometimes to help me make a buying decision, but how many times have you read a great review only to have the next review state exactly the opposite.

Yes, some of them are amusing.

I like reading them. But when I'm using them to help make a decision, I try not to magnify the negative comments too much. It's amazing how one negative review can throw a person off. If some of the stuff confirms what I may have already been thinking myself, then usually I'll give it some weight. But I've encountered user reviews where a majority of people have been less pleased with someting, and I can't figure out why sometimes.

Always best to try things for yourself in my opinion. If you can't, sometimes you can be at the mercy of user reviews.

I have done hundreds of reviews of woodworking tools and products and have gotten to know lots of folks in the manufacturing world there. During one of the major national trade shows I went to lunch with a bunch of sales people from a major tool manufacturer and they spent most of the 2 hours there telling med about how they spent hours every week writing bad reviews about competitors products on the bigger seller sites.
I don;t know how you fixsomethingg like that but I think it is important to remember that it happens andprobablyy not just int he woodworking industry.

linnin, user reviews can be helpful and yes amusing sometimes. If they are available I will read them and sometimes look for them if I am interested in a piece of gear.

They're worth reading, but you get a lot of:

(1) Folks so amped-up about their new toy that they just gotta crow about it.
(2) Folks without enough experience to make an informed judgement.
(3) Malicious trolls (professional or hobbiests) who love to trash stuff. I've read some pretty extreme exaggerations of equipment failure (like... the neck totally broke in half while I was playing it). Really?

I think if you get enough reviews, the aggregate score is a decent indicator.
