I was watching a Youtube video the other day of an interview with him and Ernie Ball. They were talking about the contour of the six neck bolt section at the back and how it came to be. Steve had broken his wrist but still needed to play because he was touring at the time. He literally took his guitar into a sports doctor, held his left hand on the fretboard and had them apply the cast in that position. However, he wasn't able to get to the high frets because of the cast so, he took it to a bench grinder and ground off the excess so he could gig.

I feel your pain. I cut my hand pretty bad once and it took a while before I was able to play.
