I've been checking out the Gibson stuff lately - especially the Slash Epiphone and Gibson American - and it's just brought home to me how great Fender guitars are. Imho, the Slash is by far the best product Gibson makes that I've ever heard. Slash's neck profile, long tenon and unreal pickups deliver a thick tone from any amp. Seriously, I just turned on the Hot Rod Deville in the music store and instantly there was very excellent tone from the Slash - the best I've ever heard from a Gibson. Slash goes for a musical, rich tone because he's a really talented musician and plays beautifully. I've played other Gibson solids and never found one with the same kind of great tone as the Slash, for my taste. A lot of them have sort of a harsh sound and ceramic humbuckers. I'm not into that kind of metal. The Slashes are really good guitars from Gibson. The Slashes, even the Epiphone, are expensive. So I go home and plug in my Strat and - wow, it's very similar but with a little more edge from the single coils. Just a Highway One with CS TX Spc and it's got a similar rich, beautiful tone, possibly even exceeding it depending on your taste. Better for some things worse for others.

How's that even possible? Gibson was an old-line guitar manufacturer and their Les Pauls including the Slash are kind of like what a guitar maker would dream up for a premium guitar they made. Mahogany and flame maple, humbuckers, glued necks, lots of lacquer painstakingly applied, and a lot of work by hand. Like, it's an example of their craft of making instruments. Fender's the opposite. He was an inventor - really kind of a creative tinkerer. He knew nothing about making guitars. He said, what do players want, and how can I deliver that with mass production to keep the price down. So then, Fender ended up getting to the same place as Gibson, and even farther in the opinions of a lot of us, at way less cost. Gibson guitars are just super-expensive to make compared to Fenders, and Fenders sound every bit as good. Leo listened to musicians.

So let's help Fender take it to the next level? What do we need now?

Here's my suggestion: Noiseless pickups that sound as good and are as hot the classic single-coils - CS 54s, CS Fat 50s, CS TX Spc to name a few. It's worth the research to engineer this advance, using some of what Kinman's come up with probably to take noiseless to a new level. Leo would do it.

Try a Gretsch solid body, they make Gibbys look like Epis. Gretsch is putting out some staggeringly good guitars right now.

King, let's give Fender suggestions. Listening to musicians is what made Fender great. I'm sure you have a good one.

i am tryinh to buy or trade for a special edition deluxe tele with dual humbackers, i have played one and it feels like a tele, but sounds more like a lp and if you go to the guitar center site and look them up that is what most of the reviews say, smoother and plays better then an over priced lp. that is why i want it, i need something that is versatile, that can sound like a lp or a prs, then my others can sound like the rest.
