Try doing an Internet search. Some sites give basic free lessons. It's a start, and would let you know if you're interested in continuing. Or, hey, there are great books available and the library usually has them for free. :)

The problem with the internet is that there is too much information available.

You think that is a problem? I think it gets confusing.

For people with short attention spans it is definately a major problem, I know from personal experience! You should see my guitar lesson material at home. I have two bookshelves filled with the next greatest method to make me a rock star!

I can identify. I don't even know how many music books I have. I found some great ones for sale at the library bookstore in one city, and I'm always looking to improve my technique (playing and teaching). Now if I just had the time to read and go through them all!

There are a bunch of free lessons on sites like YouTube, but it depends on what you have in mind in terms of just making sounds or learning some music theory in the process.

If you save up a few dollars, there are several lesson DVD-based computer courses that are variously worthwhile. If you lack the discipline to wade through these yourself, more expensive traditional one-on-one lessons are probably best.

Some cities' rec departments and park districts also offer basic, basic how-to group lessons in music.

Some great books at the bookstore and library. I'm self taught and learned from a guitar chord chart and books. My nephew, in PA, wants to learn to play and can't afford lessons, so I am sending him a chord book to start with.

Side note: always play to an absolute rhythm source. Don't trust the clicktrack in your head. It's made out of squishy gray stuff, and your time will end up gray and squishy.

At the risk of being a pathetic shill for Fender, I always recommend the G-DEC Jr. for beginners. It's cheap, has perfect time, and will get you having huge fun while you practice which will keep you playing longer and better. (the preceeding should have been a paid endorsement for Fender, world's largest producer of fine quality musical instruments for all the family. Maruuk is not an employee of FMI or its many excellent affiliates. But he could be.....hint hint)

I have thought of getting a G-Dec for my son (8) and I to try and then moving to a Cyber amp, if we get serious. Any other endorsements for the G-Dec? :)
