I'm interested in recording the music I play. I'm not interested in a home studio, just keeping a record of my progress as a player. What's a good way to do this? I think some editing capability would be best because I would want to delete lengthy before and after the songs. Ideally I'd be able to store the songs on CD and listen to them in album fashion.

I don't want to spend more than $200 or so and I already have a laptop computer, if that helps.

you will need a recording software in your computer
for me, it is just direct recording from marshall amp line out to pc
usually the pc input will need a stereo jack adaptor
to match between the size of guitar cord and pc jack input
the pc input usually is pink colour

What I do is I just do a line out from my amp into the port on my soundcard, and then I just record it using Audacity. 100% free recording right there

+1 on Audacity. If you're not interested in a home studio, this is by far the easiest and cheapest way to do it.

You could pick up a used Fostex 4 track tape recorder. I used one of those for years just to put ideas down.

Thank you for the advice on Audacity. I tried it and I think it is fantastic. This does exactly what I wanted. I sincerely appreciate your help.

Get a Line6 Guitar Port, or Tone Port. With the Gearbox software, you'll get all kinds of great tones. You can use your own wah pedal, or your favorite pedal(s) with the Guitar Port, or Tone Port. Plus they are cheap!!

Plus i use Reaper >http://www.cockos.com/reaper/download.php ..as well as Audacity.
