What's your favorite delay pedal?

I really like analog delays. I have a Maxon AD-999 and the new MXR Carbon Copy Analog delay. I much prefer analog delays over digital delays. The repeats sound so fat and musical. Most digital delays I've come across sound thin and ice picky...

Isn't Analog anything preferred over Digital anything?

True, but in the market is overrun with digital delays. Analog delays are not as easy to find, say at your local Guitar Center.

That is why when I am in the market for a new pedal I always check out Craig's List and eBay to see if any analog pedals are being sold.

My favorite is my old tape Echoplex EP-3 (made in 1973).

But ... I have an Ibanez DE7 pedal that does a pretty good job of mimicing the Echoplex -- with less tape hiss and less maintenance required.

Hey Chet, here's a pic of the other pedal I was talking about. They cost $150 which is half the price of most other analog delays. Beside having 600 ms of delay time, it has a modulation button which adds a subtle phase-like sound to the delay. I'm getting Pink Floyd sounds all day long!

Wasn't that part of the charm of the old units though?

MXR pedals are pretty good.

Are you still having an easy time finding replacement tape cartridges for your Echoplex? I heard they stopped making them. Echoplexes are the best though...The original Roland Space Echos are cool too.

I can live with the hiss, but all of the head cleaning and demagnetizing got old.

I have a couple of cartridges and I figured out a way to put new tape into them using my reel-to-reel tape machine.

I like the Danelectro 'Back Talk' DR-1 Reverse Delay. I don't know if it's a analog or digital pedal (I think probably digital), but it does trippy reverse tape effects very well without excess hiss. Yes, I know it's NOT a proper delay pedal, but I still think it's worth mentioning.

You're right man. Those pedals are digital but they sound really cool.

A lot of the current delay pedals can get the Low-Fi sound of old tape echoes.

The thing that I searched for a long time was a LONG enough delay.
The Ibanez DE7 has like 2.5 seconds of delay time! Now that's what I was looking for ... the final touch to be able to give the Echoplex a rest.

Besides, I stopped taking expensive, fragile, vintage gear to gigs in crummy bars.

I used to have a Boss Analog Delay pedal and loved it. Right now I am using a Boss Digital Delay and, while it has its place, the effect inherent in the analog delay is definately missing.
