Having just seen a thread about a guitar on eBay at a ridiculously high price, I got to thinking, what would I buy if money were no object?

So, let me ask, if you were handed a pile of cash and told you had one day to spend it and could only spend it on five guitars or related items, what would you buy?

My list is this:

1. An original 1957 Strat, sunburst, maple and white - maybe £20,000?

Image

2. A Dumble ODS - £20,000
Image

3. A 1960 Cherry Sunburst Les Paul Standard - £200,000 and change

Image

4. A pedal board full of Pete Cornish gear - maybe £5,000?

Image

5. A 1958/59 Martin D-18 - £6,000. I own a very faithful late 70s Japanese copy, which sounds beautiful. The real thing it another level.

Image

So what's your five?

If money is no barrier, I'd like to have these, in all their original glory:

1. A 1957 Precision bass
2. A 1960 Jazz bass
3. A 1958 Stratocaster
4. A 1953 Fender Bassman 5B6 1x15 combo
(great for both bass or guitar)
5. Another 1965 Supro Thunderbolt bass amp, like I used to have, and
really wish I still did.

i like this.
1- candy apple red early 60s Jaguar, with matching headcap
2- Elite Stratocaster!
3- Kurt Cobain's 65 Jaguar, if money were really no object i'd hunt that down.
4- early twin reverb
5- and if it were really no object at all, i'd march into guitar center and have them load everything in the vintage room up for me. just because I could. !

1975 Hardtail Stratocaster, Oly-White/Black PG, or Black on Black, Both with maple neck.

Marshall fullstacks, same setup like this:

And a Mark II, just like that.

And probably a new drum setup, not for me, but my friend. I'd get him a set of Alpha Boomer Powerslave cymbals.

And a studio for my friends with their bands plus me and my current group to use.

1. I would hire a detective to find the dirt bag that stole my Gibson es330 back in '82. (You said guitar related).

2. The original Broadcaster prototype.

3. An original "Princeton Boogie"

4. A museum quality '64 princeton reverb. (I know, two "Princetons")

5. This custom Gibson

Hi Nobby: so it's the guitar version of Brewster's Millions, right?

Then I wouldn't bother with vintage stuff; I'd go to my five favourite luthiers and have them build me their finest
axes. Seems like a plan.

I'd have Yuri Shishkov do something along the lines of this:

Image

Some tarty timber from Roger Giffin would be essential:

Image

One of Andy Manson's elegent, simple acoustics might be necessary:

Image

Can't live much longer without a Martyn Booth guitar:

Image

And for those Professor Brainstorm moments a weird little bit of me has always wanted a Teuffel Birdfish. Not
enough to pay for one - but since you're forcing the money upon me...:

Image

Now. Back to reality.

Cheers - C

That's stunning Ceri - I can see why you might want one!

But, this is... umm, weird! It reminds me more of an Italian coffee machine than a guitar Ceri. Also looks uncomfortable (but probably isn't!)

Stratman, if I had brownie I would have to have blackie too, but my dad would break in and try to steal them (he no longer plays, used to be a bassist, but he is a big EC fan)

Oh, that definitely counts MH! Perhaps the best on the list... would you get them to cover 'extras' when they find him?

Now that's sharing Buxom, even if you did have unlimited funds. Quite the Christmas present! :D

Money is no object, eh?

Well, my smart-aleck answer would be five 1958/59/60 Les Paul Sunbursts in mint condition. Then I could take my pick of the litter, and sell the other four and then have even MORE money to buy the stuff I want...but only slightly more seriously:

(1) and (2) A pair of Masterbuilt Custom Shop Fender guitars--my personal "ultimate" Stratocaster (based on a hardtail '62 Stratocaster [if there was such a thing]) and my personal "ultimate" Telecaster (based on a early 60's Custom Telecaster and my current Tele Special).

(3) An all-tube, two-channel 30-watt Fender-style amp I have (mentally) designed, based on my favorite features from a '63 Vibroverb and an early 70's Bassman Ten...it would take too long to describe all the specs I have in mind, but needless to say, it would be pretty unique...

(4) A vintage Gibson of some sort; possibly an early style Flying V or a reverse-body Firebird with two mini-buckers and a hardtail bridge (no Vibrola tremolo).

(5) The last thing would be the grandest of these endeavors. I have (again, in my mind) designed a rehearsal/recording/performance venue that has the capability of being adjusted (through the use of recessed, moveable walls) from the size of a small club (about the size of the old Caravan of Dreams club in Fort Worth, Texas) to a small theater (about the size of the Granada Theater in Dallas, but with single-level seating)  to a small semi-outdoor venue (front portion covered, but opens up to outdoor grassy seating). The stage itself would be fairly large and have moveable sound baffles for some track isolation (for recording) as well as two or three isolation booths for specific uses.
Of course, the venue needs to be equipped with the necessary plethora of instruments to make jamming/performing/recording as easy as possible--a piano, Hammond B3 and other keyboard section, two sets of drums (one left handed set for my favorite drummer/best friend, set up to his specs and one regular right-handed set), both mic'd up and ready to roll, a bass rig big enough to be used for whichever configuration the venue is set up with, and a second guitar rig (preferably non-Fender as a counter-point to my rig--Vox, Dr. Z or Marshall...mostly Vox) for visiting dignitaries and scoundrels alike.

If we're allowed a 6th, it would be a 1960's Fiesta Red Bass VI...

I must be growing dim in my old age-this is "money is no object" topic and I didn't write in my absolute dream gear
1.A guitar George Harrison owned
2. A guitar that John Lennon owned or one of his original pieces of artwork
3. A playable guitar that Jimi Hendrix owned
4. A reverse body Gibson Firebird VII in Cardinal Red or Pelham Blue
5. An SG bodied '61 Gibson Les Paul Custom, white with gold plating,3 PAF pups and a Vibrola or the black Les Paul Custom hardtail which is worth 50% more than the white ones due to it's rarity..These guitars were built as the new Les Pauls until 1963 when it was changed to the SG.Les Paul didn't want his name on it,a lot of people think that was because he didn't like it.Les didn't want his name associated with the guitar because he was undergoing a somewhat less than amicable divorce and didn't want his name on any products because he would have to pay a large chunk of royalties to his ex.The Les Paul that we know today didn't reappear until 1968.
6.3 late 60s Marshall 1959 Plexi stacks with 100W A&B cabinets.
7.A mid 60s Vox AC-30
8.A Vox Super Beatle
9. A Vox 7120 amp
10.A Vox Conqueror
11.A Mellotron Mark II
12.A Vox Super Continental II organ
13.A Hammond L-100 with a Leslie cab.
14. A lowrey Heritage Deluxe organ
15. Fender Super Showman
16. Fender black face Twin
17.Black face Fender Deluxe Reverb
18. A Vox Defiant
19. A Vox Supreme
20.A Coral Electric Sitar

That's quite a list but that's just the start of what would happen for me if money was no object.
