Where in the song? In the beginning after the 1st verse? After the second verse? Third verse? at the end?

If you are writing the song wouldn't it be up to as to where it should go?

If you have to ask then the song probably shouldn't have one at all. Adding a solo to a song just to do it is just awful. Solos should only be played when the "need" to be played, otherwise it kind of defeats the purpose. Guitar players...

I was in a band that when the guitar player add the solos, the bass player(me) and the drummer would be playing changes in tempo and beats it sounded like all 3 of us are playing something different but off of each other, it was cool on recordings, but a pain live. In the studio we would add 2 more guitar tracks, so that's what you get used to listening, then live, there were only the 3 of us, no 2 extra guitar players. I do agree if you'd have to ask, maybe you're just adding a guitar solo for the sake of a guitar solo.

The best pop or rock music is based on Blues forms, which were ingenius, or in the case of Fleetwood Mac folk forms with a Blues twist, which worked great. Since I'm a Blues hobbyist, I'd say you need a real good solo at the beginning to set up the song. The solo should be whatever the melody is but with improvisation around it, like in BB King's Modern Records version of "You Done Lost Your Good Thing Now." Then, during the song, little mini-solos should be put in at the end of every verse, like in BB King's Modern Records version of "You Done Lost Your Good Thing Now." Then, after the second verse, a lengthy, melodic guitar solo should be included. Mini solos should precede and follow the chorus. At the end of the song, a lengthy, melodic guiitar solo and improvisation should occur, taking it to another level - for example if you've been playing a song based on Blues scales in A, like 5-8, 8-9-10, 10-12, go down to the 17th-20th fret for that wicked liquid glass Strat sound, then at the conclusion back it up to 5-8 and play a variation on your melodic lead.

Hey, if pop songs were like this, they'd be a lot better.

From a compostion standpoint there isn't a whole lo of difference between blues and pop. Add another chord (one or both of the relative minors ideally), and another line to the progression in most cases.

Blues and Pop(or rock n' roll), however, have vastly different ways of telling the same story. Wanking over a pop song gets old and tired quick, just ask your band. In Blues it's part of what makes the art form work, the whole call and response. I stand by my answer that if he doesn't hear and feel where a solo is needed, then either the song doesn't need one, or he needs to go back to the drawing board with it altogether.

Even if this is a blues tune...he shouldn't be soloing just to solo. The solo should mean something to him and the song. Otherwise everyone will hear it for what it is.

All good stuff so far. I'd say the solo goes where the solo fits. The music and lyrics have to lead to the solo, if one is needed.

.....Open your heart, I'm coming home.....SOLO!

It goes where it's supposed to go...... !!!!! It depends upon the song. Most are in the middle and at the end. But for example the Beatles " And Your Bird Can Sing " has the "solo" throughout and it works !!!

That's one of my all time favorite songs. It's just constructed so beautifully.

The solo should go whereever you want it to go. Music is an artform, and the artist can do whatever they want with their own art.

Another great from that time period, but not the biggest hit, was Rain. Lennon was on a roll those years.

It goes wherever it works--meaning, if it doesn't work anywhere it doesn't work anywhere. If it works everywhere--it goes there.

As for your choices--you left off a couple of common solo locations--before and after the bridge. (Or during the bridge.)
