I have an older Boss CS-3 and want a new compressor or do a mod on mine. Anybody have any experience with Fromel mods on ebay ? What are some good recommendations on new one's in the $150.00 to $200.00 range.

Why what is wrong with yours?
How much benefit will you get from any mod?

Rule of thumb with compressors. If you know it is on, it's set up wrong. Very easy to go overboard on a much misunderstood effect.

I have not heard any modded ones. Isn't the CS3 what everyone considers the best Boss compressor? The only way I would mod one is to reduce artifacts in the sound like hiss or noise if it was noticeable. Someone on here had a Lemon Squeeze compressor and it sounded nice and transparent.

I believe Keeley does a mod for the cs-3, but really why??? Whats the problem your having? Maybe we can help you save your money.

I have tried a few compressors over the years and they all seemed to do more than just compress. They all seemed to colour the sound in a way I was not keen on. About 8 to 10 years ago or so I bought an original model Keeley Compressor and I am happy with it. It compresses pretty transparently. They have fancier models nowadays but I won't be upgrading. I simply don't use compression that often anymore. It's not even on my pedal board as an option for a couple of years now. Still, I have to say that it's head and shoulders above the several others I've tried including the BOSS CS2, CS3, MXR SuperComp and Diamond.

I bought a Memphis Compressor in '78, and I still have it and use it. It's the only compressor I've ever bought. I guess I've gotten my money out of it.
If anyone wants to buy it for $175,000, I "might" part with it.

Yup, the best compressors are "can't tell it's on, but miss it when it's gone"

The Keely's are highly regarded by guitar players. I'm still happy with my Aphex Punch Factory for my bass rig. Aphex just redesigned it and fixed every criticism I had about the old orange one. I'm amazed now as it is totally what I suggested.

The two are comparable in price. I would like to try the Keeley as I don't know how well it works with bass. I know the Aphex does. I also know Boss, MXR, etc suck all the bass out of the tone for some reason. I also use the MarkBass Compressore and while I use it quite a bit I still prefer the Aphex mainly because it is simpler to set and forget.

I prefer 2 knob compressors like the original Keeley and the Aphex Punch Factory. Simpler the better. One thing the Keely has in it's favor is the size. It is small.

Although its $9 over your quoted budget I reckon its worth considering The Rothwell Love Squeeze.

I'll be picking one up in a couple of weeks time largely due to the following: Small footprint, no noise, very transparent and made in the UK. Win, win with a side order of win. :D

Cheers!

Andy

You'll never go wrong with Carl Martin, ever. I'd say not only is my plexitone the best pedal I've bought, it's the best drive pedal I've seen.
The only drive unit that gets on a par with amp drive. And I use very good amps with lots of drive.

I used a Boss for a while, I changed to a Visual Sound compressor, and I never used the Boss again. It just stepped on the tone a bit more than you'd like.

To my ears this guy does the Empress unit real justice:

I have been using a Strymon OB.1 optical compressor/clean boost for the past several months. It is the most subtle, transparent compressor I have experience with. I had (and to some extent still do) been using a Wampler Ego Compressor, which is also a great pedal, but colors the sound a lot more than the Strymon. Both pedals within your budget.
Just got another OB.1 for my son for Christmas. Listen to several sound clips here:

I'm very happy with my Dyna-Comp.
