Received my Squier Vintage Modified Jazz V today. I bought it as a back up to my FCS.

The Pros;
The bass looks really nice. I never was a big fan of the natural finish (only option with this model), but I have to admit this one looks pretty nice.
I was really surprised at how easy the bass is to play. The neck is great and I like the satin finish. Smooth, fast and straight. All I needed to do was a few small adjustments on string height and set the intonation.

The Cons:
A few Q/C issues. One string tree screw is installed crooked. I would like to replace it with a better one. Maybe one like on my FCS Jazz.
The control knobs are crooked as well. It's not bad. You can only tell when turning them. At one point they will scrap the chrome plate. However, they do work properly so no big deal.
I can get a decent sound with the equipment I have, but I'm still keeping the option of replacing the pups and pots. They are plenty hot enough and it's really not a bad sounding bass. When you look at what I'm use to playing, well I'm probably being too picky.

Despite the few issues, I really like the feel of this bass and I know that I will enjoy playing it. When considering the price, overall this is a very good bass.

I had a similar experience reciving this bass via FedEx as I did with my FCS last year. (http://www.fender.com/community/forums/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=65479&start=15)
The FedEx online site said the bass was loaded on a truck this morning for delivery. At about 2:00pm FedEx arrived with a small package, but no bass. I asked the driver about it and he said it was probably loaded on another truck this morning and will be delivered Monday. I called and made arragements for me to go there and pick it up, but unlike last year when I drove over 100 miles one way to Tulsa, I only had to go about 35 miles to McAlester.

Well it's home now. Looks good under the tree, don't it?

Thanks everyone. I appreciate it. Merry Christmas to all.

Just had a 4 hour practice with the band today. Took the Squier and really enjoyed it. Dialed in a pretty good sound using a SansAmp BDDI and playing through our drummer's Hartke Kickback with a 15" speaker.
The bass was easy to play. I'm really liking the neck, especialy after I did the set up. Low action with no fret buzz anywhere on the neck. Intonation is pretty good everywhere on the neck. It holds tune well and is very quiet.

So far I have no problems recommending the Squier Vintage Modified Jazz V. If you looking for an inexpensive 5 string or 4 string, you should at least give it a try.

She's a keeper for sure-Congrats and Merry Christmas.
BTW I find the Jazz Bass much easier to play than the P-Bass due to its slimmer neck.If I were in the market for a new Bass,it would be either the Squier Jazz or Jaguar.Squier guitars are really becoming more consistant in quality and have a much better tone than they have had in the past. It's very strange that yours has so many problems, albeit it small ones they are still numerous-too numerous for a new guitar-have you considered returning it and getting one like it but in perfect order? They should have at the very least, given you a break on the price, then again it may be a factory second or demo that they sold as a new unblemished model-that may sound cynical but it has been done many times by many dealers over the years. There is a good chance that it left the shop in that condition. This could be worth your while to look into-but don't go making any accusations as everything could be above board and you could get their backs up and they'd be reluctant to help you.Anyway you may end up with a better bass or a few bucks in your pocket-it's worth a try.

I did consider sending it back, but as you mentioned the issues are minor. The playability of the bass is really good and the tone isn't bad. The overall fit and finish is okay and the finish on the body and neck is flawless. I like it well enough to keep it and fix the minor issues myself.
I have sent an email to Sweetwater about the issues I experienced. I also sent them pictures showing the problems. I told them (nicely) I didn't believe it was a new bass, but either a demo or one that someone else returned. They should answer back tomorrow. We'll see what they have to say about it then. If they're willing to work with me I'll keep it. If not there's a good chance that I'll send it back.

Nice tree too! Never have touched the 5 string version and likely never will! LOL.

I have a Charlie Brown tree this year.

That's the tree my 4 grand daughters decorated, ages 5 - 10, while my grandson, 19 months, gave us a concert on my Strat. http://www.fender.com/community/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=81260

I have played a 5 string for so long now I'm not sure I could make it through a gig with a 4 string. Tha's bad on my part.
I need to pull that old '75 P-bass out and get use to playing it again. It would make a great back up bass. Just hate to start gigging with it again. It's safe in it's case at home.

Enjoy, Roadie!

My daughter's boyfriend (a moderate gear snob) recently got one exactly like it and loves it.

Thanks.

I'm liking it so far.

I did hear back from Sweetwater this morning. They have been very cooperative and all is well.
