After a while of not playing with this particular drummer, I had him over last night. We were trying to kill time before going and seeing The Hobbit, so we set up and started jamming.

I don't know what it was, but I stopped listening and focusing on myself playing. I don't know why, but I focused solely on him. It may be due to the fact that I started playing drums about 2 months ago and want to pick up on it, but I was doing really poorly. I feel ashamed to say that I'm still a guitar player.

Is this the guy in the video you posted a few months back?

Yep. He's good and all, but difficult to focus with now. I don't know what it is, maybe I was adjusted to a more precise drummer, who matches better. (my main man has about 8 years experience, he has a little over 3)

Of course you realize that the drummer sets the pace...

If you're not following him... you're the problem...

Got to learn to play nice with others...

cheers!

We would both start off on cue and then about 30 seconds into whatever we were doing I'd just lose track and start listening to him without listening to myself.

From what I saw of him, he needs much less sugar in his diet. It was all fills and showing off, but he seemed incapable of providing a steady beat.
Replace him with a machine or metronome - even a dripping tap.

He's good. That was our first time jamming. If I had more stuff of him, I'd show it. I know he and his band recorded a song, which was pretty good, but I can't remember where to find it. Anyways, I'm just worried. I'm going to have to find what works, even if it means laying right in front of my amp. Then again, maybe it's all in my head and I was standing in the wrong position, relative to my amp and the drum setup. Maybe I'm just paying interest on something I may never buy. I won't know until the next time I jam.

When I had jams at my place years ago, all were welcome. Any instrument, any skill level. All except drummers that is. I had a kit permanently set up, but we ended up just using a rhythm machine most of the time, much more productive.
A basic beat is all you need to advance your skills. It doesn't have to sound like the finished product at every jam.

A lot of my jams are in 4/4 3/4 6/8, basic stuff.

Sometimes we get crazy, though.

Also, about these jams, have you ever had someone with a weird instrument, like accordion or something along those lines show up?

We always had a Clarinet. Also trumpets and Sax of all shapes and sizes. Most of these are in different keys, so we had to have a fair bit of discussion. A bored drummer banging away while we tried to transpose notes was an unwelcome distraction. I've got nothing against drummers. It was just the early stages of playing when we were trying to find our feet.
