I love both of their styles of guitar playing but which should I learn first?

JW here too - I play a lot of his stuff (course I'm old 'eh). I study all the Kings - BB, albert and freddie, also Elmore James, Muddy, Howlin' Wolf, Clapton, etc. Johnny was amazingly fast. SRV is good too but to me he came later...

There are enough Vaughan-abees out there already. I think if he were here, he'd initially be flattered, but ultimately say, "Go and learn from everybody and develop your own thing..."

Stevie borrowed/stole/whatever a little bit from everybody; people notice the obvious Albert King and Jimi Hendrix influences, but he also took inspiration and licks from Hubert Sumlin, Kenny Burrell, Buddy Guy, and a dozen others...that's why he sounded like himself.

Johnny Winter did the same thing--took a little bit from everybody and created his own unique style. In Winter, you hear slide playing influenced by Muddy, straight playing influenced by Albert Collins, rhythms influenced by the Stones, and speed influenced by white crosses (just kidding...maybe) :P

When I started playing in the late 80's, SRV dominated the blues scene--with good reason; he was the newest, most unique blues player in a long time, and he promoted his heroes greatly, in interviews, song selection and by performing with them...however, when I started playing, I realized I would be one faceless player in a cast of thousands if I just copped SRV's licks and style; therefore, I started copping other players first and foremost (Keef, Muddy Waters, Jimmie Vaughan, etc.) as well as learning to play harp (Kim Wilson, Little Walter, Mick Jagger, Howlin' Wolf and James Cotton were my biggest influences there); thus, I developed a kind of "counter-point" to all the SRV imitators. It didn't make me a "better" player than those guys, but it made me stand out from the crowd.

So my vote is "Z"--learn a lick from everybody you like and then combine them to give us something new.

I like Jimmy Page first, Eric Clapton second for blues.
