Hello:

I am trying to learn how to do trills on my Stratocaster. I've made some progress, but seem to be stuck in the following state:

The volume steadily decreases as I trill. My understanding is that I should be able to sustain the volume indefinitely with my pull-offs.

Can you give me some advice on doing good trills?

Thank you.

What your lacking is simply strength in your hand (or finger). It'll eventually come to ya, keep practicing. I remember when I had the same problem.

Here's what you can do until you can keep the volume with your finger. After you start the trill, go to your volume knob and gradually crank it up to keep it going. You can also use that volume knob to fade the trill in and out. Listen to Stevie Ray Vaughan's "Little Wing" for the worlds best trills.

Thank you! I suspected that might be the problem. I'll keep working on it.

RubyH, this is one of those practice, practice, practice things. Keep plugging at it and one day you'll be surprised with "Hey, this sounds great!"

I've been playing for 25 years and still can't trill like Tony Iommi unless I use my pick.

You need to practice more. ;) The only combination of fingers that are difficult for me to trill with without picking are the 3-4 (ring and pinky) fingers.

Pick up "Speed Mechanics for Electric Guitar" by Troy Stetina. Although this is geared towards metal, fast rock, progressive, virtuoso stylings, the exercises can be readily used to build finger strength and versatility for any style - playing in general.

Barring that, if you have a steel string acoustic and high tolerance of pain, do trill exercises on that. It'll make playing an electric seem like child's play.

Cheap trills?

Are 'trills' similar to 'kiclks'? If so, according to Paul Revere, they keep gettin' harder to find.

Sorry.
