Tony, I hope your brother lands on his feet real soon.

Bluesky, I know your dilemma. I was a systems admin and was "laid off" with the rest of my staff last year, all of us on the same day. We obviously were to costly to the company. We were let go for a "lack of work". I found out later that the company hired a "computer" expert right out of a 2 year associates degree collage a month after we were let go.

It's all about money now, there is no company respect for the worker any more.
I just hope all of us have success soon.

Been in that situation 3 times in my working life Tony, last time was 3 years ago after 15 years service like your brother, managed to get another job pretty quick so the redundancy package was money in the bank, hope things work out for your brother also, wish him luck from me.

This is some sad stuff - especially when one puts in so many years in a company. Fact is that we are all next to the chopping block at any time. Unfortunately, we cannot expect companies or managers to have any loyalty. The only thing to do is to be constantly prepared for the worst...

Fact of life: Companies don't want to keep older/more experienced/more expensive employees. They would rather have cheap, inexpensive labor out of college that doen't know squat about the industry, regardless of what the industry is. I have been unemployed for the past 4 months after 35+ years in the defense/intelligence community. I have held high level clearances that require in depth background investigations and polygraphs as well as clearances I can't even acknowledge I held. I'm 58 years old. Every person that was laid off the same day I was laid off were over 50. All companies care about these days is their bottom line.

Some "Companies don't want to keep older/more experienced/more expensive employees". Not all companies. However, all companies always care about their bottom line...that's what keeps companies (and their employees) alive. That said, I'm sorry for anyone who loses their job after years of dedicated service.

This is another reason unions are vital. In fact, at some of the places I've worked, I would have liked to have two or three unions to protect the workers. And a labour attorney with me at all times.

I was a teamster for 33 years and it still happened. Being in a union is not going to prevent this. BTW I am not dissing unions.

+1
Unless you have language in your contract that guarantees you work, you can get laid off, and even with said language, when that contract comes up, that may be something that doesn't get agreed upon in new contract. NOBODY is safe, union, non-union, owner, or employee.

"contract that guarantees you work"..???? Why would anyone expect a contract that guarantees you work? I'm not trying to be insensitive to the OP but how could anyone expect guaranteed work?

sorry to hear that, dude. mojo from tennessee.
on a related note, in a meeting with the VP today, we were informed that our company is overstaffed by about 15 people.... and i quote "not that i'm going to ask anyone to voluntarily quit this week, but... you know. "
yeah. scary. especially when i've only been back from a back injury for a couple of months. i expect my head will be rolling any day now.
good thing i've already been looking ,and have a few things looking promising.
