The best strat is the one you have in your hand and are playing :)

In '91, 'bought an American Standard, first Fender.

'Bout 7 years later, a Surf Green 50's to play surf.

In '05, a polka dot Buddy Guy.

All were set up by a serious pro and string with 9s, 11s and 10s (with wound 3rd) respectively).

'Love them equally, like fraternal triplets. Go figure.

Personal preference, man.

I think the Highway One is sort of like "the strat that isn't a strat"...ie, it's heavier, and it has that wider neck....

As far as a "strat" goes, I still like my 1968 Japanese leftie reissue. It sounds like a classic strat, and plays like a dream...

Which is the best ice cream flavor?

As with the vast strat. choices, it is similar scenario.

It is a matter of taste.

You'd think that once you've played one Strat you've played 'em all. Uh uh. Differences in woods, pickups, electronics, hardware, even setup will change your experience. As I've noted several times, I have the VG Strat and it plays brilliantly - a top notch Fender Strat by all accounts. But the 'green monster' that I used to upgrade to it (still trying to be sold at the guitar store) is completely different and yet still a top notch Fender Strat. It has that tonal quality that the VG doesn't have - especially with the neck pickup (Hendrix and blues sing and moan through this guitar).

I've been trying out the Strats at my local guitar store (which has a limited selection) and the differences are rarely vague. The vintage 70's Strat doesn't work for me at all. The Eric Johnson signature was nice but the polyurethane maple neck slows me down for some reason (I'm a FAST player - think Satriani and Malmsteen here). What I want is the new YJM signature if I can afford it (and rationalize, er justify, the incurred debt). Unfortunately, I doubt that this little shop will have one that I can pluck from its grasp. :)

The best Stratocaster happens to be the one you are playing at the moment. All the other ones are silent.

By the way, why are guys so hung up one the Highway one Strat?? It is a stripped down version of an American model. The finish kinda' sucks, and wears off easily. It's best feature is it says USA and the price. I know this will aggravate some of you, but it is just a thought.

Some people love the thin finish because it wears so fast. Not everyone wants a poly encased axe thats gonna look new in the year 2525.

That doesn't mean your opinion is wrong though.

yeah, I personally like the highway one finish...especially for like a tele! but having that worn look just kinda adds that "personality" I guess...or something like that.
