Gang - a few important updates on this fine Friday morning:

Firstly, things got a bit loose here particularly over Thanksgiving weekend with heavy spamming ... and we're still working on getting things tightened down. The forum is continuing to see automated spam activity currently; if you see spam, simply hit the "Report" button and ignore the posting and we'll work on getting it removed.

Secondly, the forum software itself is due for an upgrade and this will be happening within the next few weeks. (This was actually already scheduled to happen but I'm mentioning it here since the upgrade carries with it the promise of improved spam filtering, which is something I think we'll all celebrate.) Please be aware that this upgrade will carry with it a bit of scheduled downtime, which I'll announce as the transition draws closer.

Thirdly, there's been some discussion about a Fender Lounge Forums guitar flowing around here and that's been quite intriguing to me - I've yet to weigh in on the topic, but just know that I'm reading the discussions and in wait-and-watch mode to see how the conversation gels. I certainly cannot make any promises as to what is and is not possible there as of yet, but just know that - at least at a surface level - I happen to agree that it'd be a pretty darned cool project.

Fourthly, and perhaps most importantly, I met with my good buddy Rob Schwarz (Fender's Director of Customer Service) and asked him to start helping out a bit more 'round these parts - those with eagle eyes will notice that most of the forum areas are now set to be moderated by both Rob and I rather than just by myself. Rob has had an amazing 30+ year run at Fender and is just a fantastic feller. He's already been participating here increasingly on his own accord and it just makes a lot of sense. Rob and I have shared many late evenings at the office during my own early days out here, and he's the real deal - I'm thrilled to have his increased involvement here!

Anyway, that's about it! I've noted a few concerns expressed here over the past week regarding the need to tighten things up a bit and just wanted to assure everyone that they've come through loud and clear. Until we get the software update I mentioned above rolled out I'm anticipating continuing to see automated spam, so please bear with us in the interim.

As one final side note on the spam topic, I've noted a few cases of folks registering here using e-mail addresses as usernames. Keep in mind when you do that that you're leaving that address open to be "harvested" by spammers. Highly, highly recommend that anyone currently using an email address for a username update it to something else.

Really appreciate everyone's continued participation here, and could not be happier that you're all choosing to spend time with us on a daily basis. It's been quite enjoyable watching these forums continue to grow and develop through the years. And now, with that out of the way ... let us returning to collectively enthusing! :-)

Very nice to be in the loop Brad, thanks so much for the info. Here's hoping the upgrade will allow embedding YouTube clips which would really improve the forum IMO. There are many links to videos around these parts and being able to watch them, while staying in the thread would be awesome. Oh yea - and more smilies.

Brad, excellent update, and a thanks to you for the work that's been done, and for continuing to provide these forums as a place for fellow musicians to gather for discourse on music.

Thanks for all you do.. !!

cheers!

PS One suggestion I would make when your reconfiguration comes about - restrict newcomers from posting links until they have reached 25 posts.

I'm pretty certain your software will support this. I moderate a couple car forums and we had issues with Spammers joining and only posting once, leaving numerous links to their products or services.

We also had several incidents of hackers leaving malicious links which caused several members to become infected with viruses, trojan horses and compromised mailboxes when they clicked on them.

It is a bit of a pain for the newbies, but it is very effective at cutting down Spammers and malicious nare-do-wells who simply won't stay around long enough to make 25 posts, perhaps even a ban for the 1st dozen posts would be as effective.

Excellent.

Any chance that the new software will be more robust and offer a way to keep people from registering using multiple IP addresses?

Let me just ambiguously answer that by stating that I'm confident that things are going to be tighter here in the very near future. Man, I should really run for political office, eh? :-)

As part of the migration to the new software I'm going to do a deep-dive review of configuration and you should definitely be expecting a few policy changes as a result - the item you've suggested here is one of the things under consideration.

Consider applying that same restriction to photos also.

Can't even imagine what you're referring to there. LOL. Will certainly evaluate what all is possible from the backend perspective.

Though I'm more than happy to surrender the "Fender Forum's Best Hair on Stage" award to Rob, I reserve the right to challenge him for it back in a week or two... in the friendliest possible manner, of course. :D
