I need advice from more experienced forum members. I have a car for sale. Someone contacted me by email and wants to pay for it through Paypal. He says he is buying it for his son, and he hasn't even looked at the car. My question is, can he scam me using Paypal? If Paypal confirms a payment has been made, can they later recind that payment? How long would I need to wait after confirmation of payment before I should release the car? I'd love to sell the car, but it smells kind of fishy and that usually ain't a good thing. Thanks.

PayPal, like eBay, now really favors the buyer, not the seller. I sold something recently, received payment, sent the item, only to have the buyer claim they never received the item and wham - there went my buyer's payment, right back to the buyer. It can be a little iffy these days and for something like a car, I don't think I would take the chance.

I think it sounds really strange that he wants to buy it sight unseen - that's just weird.

Its a scam, I had the same type of inquiry when I was selling my motorcycle. Repley with its a inperson cash deal only and they will not bother you again. Be careful and don,t fall for these scams. Craigslist is full of them.

That's my first thought also. I'm just trying to figure out how the scam works. I'm going to contact Paypal and ask about this and how long it takes to get undeniable confirmation of a payment.

Thanks Alan. I'll give that one a try. It almost seems like going to work would be easier than being a scammer.
FYI, paypal says they can take up to 21 days to verify a payment.

Agreed - stay away from this buyer.

Well I now know what his scam is. He isn't expecting to get the car. He's hoping I will pay his "pick agent", what ever that is, from the funds he is supposedly going to transfer to my paypal account. Here's his rambling message:

"Oh,I need to inform you about this, just received an email from my pick agent...am most sure i did not include that in my previous email,he said he won't come for the pick up unless i pay him the agent commission fee first in order to be able to schedule a pick up time and my pick up agent Head Quarters is in the abroad and all commission payment made for pick up from anywhere in the world is sent to their Head Quarters in the abroad and the only form of payment they accept is western union money transfer.I have tried to pay online but i will need a credit card which i didn't bring aboard the ship, and there is no post office(there is usually a western union section in most post offices) or any western union agent on sea! so i have to ask you to help me with the pick up fees, i will include the 850$ they charged to pick it up and take it my home(1st class treatment), to the payment i will send through PayPal, after i have made the payment.I will need you to help me send the 850$ to my pick up agent through western union money transfer, the western union money transfer can be made at a post office near to you, there is always a western union agent in most post offices or online at www.westernunion.com .I will be making the payment shortly and will email you as soon as it has been done."

Definitely a scam. I've heard of people who will play along with these types of people and get them all involved thinking that they're going to get paid BUT first they have to DO SOMETHING FOR YOU.

Here's some examples:

Wow yeah steer clear of this one. Next he'll be telling you he's from a nation without a pot to piss in which somehow has $4,000,000 set aside for you if you transfer $20,000 to them first.

As much fun as it might be to irritate this guy, I don't have the time, so I told him not to contact me again. I remember when tbazzone had posted about a similar scam, but didn't remember the details. At first I was highly skeptical, but hopefull. That's what they play on, is a sliver of hope. If some of these guys knew how to speak clearly and not ramble, they might be dangerous. In the end they're just a waste of our time and are polluting the earth just by breathing.

I've been taking credit cards for a long time and have had my share of PayPal scams but don;t get hung up on that. These people use all of the brand cards, I've had more issues with Master Card and Visa scams actually. It was fashionable for a while to blame everything on PayPal but that went away a dozen years ago or so but the hysteria remains a bit more resistant to reason for some.
Whenever the communication is that screwed up, so obvious not anEnglishh speaker Ijustt run the other way. Nothing about that makes me want to do business with them.

HI , i was possibly thinking about opening up an ebay store but you have warned me here. Can u please tell me if a buyer received his product and courier person has took his sign on delivery acknowledgment then how a buyer can still ask for refund.
