I suppose it's common knowledge that many songs share the same chords, but this video by the "The Axis of Awesome" makes it disturbingly clear.

This is not a new vid so you may have seen it before (or something similar) but it was new to me and I was surprised by how blatant it can be:

On the other hand it doesn't look like we will ever run out of new music either  :

It's like the whole of humanity is stuck in a rut.

I thought the music video was funny, but I couldn't listen to that guy yammer on about numbers for more than 3 minutes!

That classic pop chord progression is as cliche as 12 bar blues.

One day someone is going to come along and re-write the entire rules of music and succesfully convince the majority to conform to those rules. It's what happens....

Doubt it. Hasn't happened in the six decades I've been shuffling around this planet. Music is what it is and always has been.

Cause six decades is a very long time compared to the beggining of human life to now.

I'm just saying, surely we're gonna eventually get bored of the current music 'rules' and start from scratch.

You could always listen to Jazz. New and different music comes out everyday you just have to find it. People like what they like.

Ya music is so basic, there's a 12 note chromatic scale with Major and Minor Notes and variations of them but other than that we all have to play the same chords and scales, Even if you use lower tunings. Although I don't about Jimmy Page and Curtis Mayfield who used alternate tunings and how they work, But obviously most people use standard tunings.

Thanks for posting K, I liked all of those songs in the first vid, so cool how everyone changed the melody and lyrics. The second vid is so astounding as to answer the question sort of. 8)

Good point about how many different and really cool vocal melodies can be written over the same chords. Some hopefullness there I would say. :D

I go it and it's awesome! Thanks for the recommendation Jeebs. Fav tracks so far are "A Rumor of Skin" and then "Absolute Zero". Overall I was surprised by the awesome guitar solos and the killer lyrics too. These guys rip!!
