Any information to help me do the same to my guitar would be a great help. I have a 1990 Strat Plus that I want to refinish Graffiti Yellow.

Go to www.xhefrigutars.com. He's our Strat Plus guru. Post a question to him on his website.

Buxom, he's talking about an '80s Fender finish of that name.

I heard that's where the name came from.

It is.

For what it's worth apparently the Original American Graffiti Coupe Paint Code was: DuPont #5248A which is a 1972 Corvette Canary yellow. I am not sure fender used the exact same yellow.
Good info on the DuPont code.

Aside from that, according to Wikipedia, Canary Yellow was first given the English name in 1789. My personal experience with that colour was with a cherry hopped up '55 Chev with black Naugahyde, and a new paint job which a close friend had done to his hot car in 1965. 1958 brought a TV show called The Canary Sedan by Alfred Hitchcock, and there are no less than 35 accounts of cars with a variety of Canary Yellow formulas. The earliest seems to be Studebaker from 1935. I have seen a 1930 Model A in a similar colour; but, this one is best known as Bronson Yellow, a very close match. A Detroit company called Bronson made a lap steel (40s or 50s) in a yellow colour which they called yellow gold. Prior to the 30s yellow associations, I can't say where the similarities began.

Fender Custom Shop did a Custom Deluxe Graffiti Yellow HSS Strat in 2011; but, (not unlike earlier comments on how the Fender colour was presented) the colour was a special order, and it appears to be a rarity at least for this 2011 with 2011 specs.' Other years may have been included or excluded.

So with Canary Yellow appearing to be the most popular of this group, and a colour that spans the years, thinking the Bronson is a wild card, there is indeed a Graffiti Yellow Fender colour. :D

But, is there a possibility that there are different Graffiti Yellow paints involved? And if Canary Yellow was the flavour of the time in which American Graffiti portrayed, why was there a colour or name change? Maybe, the Graffiti car had some influence in not being period correct (doubtful), or a different colour choice was made (unlikely, but possible) or the colours were never specifically intended to be period correct or maybe they were, and, perhaps, only the Canary Yellow name was changed by Fender for promotion or legalities or . . only the originators know for sure.
Whatever the case, I'm sure your axe will look splendid in the end, cw.

Nice work on identifying the colour and code gang.
