I'm planning to start a project in the near future, and part of it is a refinish on a MIM Strat. I've decided on graffiti yellow, but i need to get the color code that fender uses. I know that Fender used a lot of automotive colors in the past, and I'm planning on using an automotive urethane finish.

Does anyone know the year, make, and color code of the car it was used on ? If not an automotive color what is it? Any info will be greatly appreciated.

You're talking about the car in American Graffiti, right?

Buxom, he's talking about an '80s Fender finish of that name.

Babalooga, I doubt you're going to get a paint code for that colour - though good luck. People sometimes come here with this type of question; I can't remember seeing a real DuPont or similar code arrived at. One person who could tell you what it is would be Mike Eldred. Whether he will or not is a different matter. That information is Fender's commercial stock in trade, after all.

I'd just go to an automotive paint supplier and choose a yellow that looks close, if I were you. Or, some of them have equipment to digitally sample colours and tell you what they are - but of course you have to have a Graffiti Yellow guitar to show them in the first place to make that work.

Again, good luck - C

I heard that's where the name came from.

Thanks Ceri, I'll probably end up just picking a color at my parts house, and yes Buxom I think you are correct about the hot rod in the movie being the inspiration for the color.
Thanks again.

I heard that's where the name came from.

It is.

For what it's worth apparently the Original American Graffiti Coupe Paint Code was: DuPont #5248A which is a 1972 Corvette Canary yellow. I am not sure fender used the exact same yellow.

The story I have heard is that Jeff Beck wanted a few guitars painted the yellow of the the 32 Ford in Amer. Graffiti (one of his favorite movies, and he also collects hotrods). Fender custom shop made them for him, and later came out with some for the public. Then off and on, they used the color on other guitars. I have a deluxe powerhouse in that color and have seen many other models of Fender on eBay in the same color.

According to A.R.Duchossior's book The Fender Stratocaster, Fender wanted Beck for the first Signature Series endorsement deal involving the then new Strat Plus. They did that guitar in Graffiti Yellow at his request but he refused the deal. You can see a photo of that guitar in A.R.'s book along with the history of the Signature Series project.

In view of all the above, I'm guessing that this indeed might very well be the actual paint code for the yellow Fender uses:

Which disproves the prediction in my earlier post! :D

Good work, Forum.

Cheers - C

Hahaha - you are having a sparkling day today, aren't you, Twelvebar? :D

You came up with the paint code, it's the first time I can remember that being done convincingly on the Forum, so you get the credit and everyone's respect for that and no one can take that away from you. You are our hero. But to be just a little bit fair to others, they've done their bit in substantiating that the yellow in the movie is indeed likely to be one and the same as on the guitars, so you can spare them a spoonful of the credit for that. No? :)

Good work, Forum.

Well, at least until Mark Kendrick pops in here and tells us it's a completely different yellow after all...

Cheers - C

That's likely the case.
