ZZ Doc...Never had a Proco Rat to compare it to. Maybe someone else here can help ya! T2

Thanks for the get back. The Rat is not unlike a TS9. So the question remains as to what kind of tonal color variations does this Clapton pedal afford me that I could not tweak out of the former. We shall see what turns up.

BTW" As an aside I had asked Brad to post my screen name as ZZDoc. I liked the graphics better, but he couldn't accommodate me to that effect.

Anyway, my friends call me 'Doc'. Please do.

You got it Doc. Now for some more bad news...I have never had a TS9 Either! I always played kind of clean usually just a cranked amp and an old Vox Wah. I like the Crossroads...it is a bit more than just a distortion pedal and it can get pretty dirty, and some of those other settings have chorus and a dash of delay built into them. Will it replace a dedicated distortion pedal? Probably not but it sure has some usable tones for someone that doesn't desire a ton of distortion.

FWIW

Do any forums have one of these and what do you think?

I bought this pedal solely for the Leslie effect (the "Badge" voice). It was pretty dang good for overdriven Rotary sounds, but I wanted to be able to get a clean Leslie sound as well. It didn't clean up as much as I would have liked, so I took it back after a rehearsal or two. It also didn't work with harmonica/harp, either (I play some harp-thru-Leslie backups on certain songs for a faux-Hammond B3 sound) due to the high gain circuit (high gain + harp mic = feedback).

Overall, it was a really nice pedal, but it just wasn't what I was looking for.

...and it's extremely cool that your friend did this for you--congrats!

DOC - if you decide you like it better than your Rat, I'm looking for another one of those. I'd buy it! (but i'm not offering to, officially, of course )

Thanks for the offer. I won't make the same mistake a friend did with his TS9. He swapped it out for some gear. Could have sold it to me but that's the way of it some times. :?

I just recently put my old ProCo LM-308 Vintage Rat on the bay and it fetched a very nice figure.

"The RAT" is a distortion pedal with a very simple circuit, based around a single op-amp, the LM308. The distortion is produced using a variable gain circuit with diodes shorting the output to ground to produce hard clipping of the input waveform. This distortion stage is followed by a passive tone filter and volume control.

From the very beginning, the RAT was destined to define “The Sound of the Underground.” It was, after all, born underground in the cavernous basement of the Pro Co Sound factory in downtown Kalamazoo, Michigan. From these humble origins, the RAT has evolved from a single, hand built prototype into a family of the most versatile and most recorded distortion pedals in the world.

Leave it to Mike to come up with the details. I was able to dial in a very creamy overdriven sustain, bluesy and Claptonesque. I find that many of these floor gadgets be they single units, or a multifects board overdo distortion to the nines. What this Digitech can add to the mix is of interest.

Finally found a fresh 9 volt so I could try out this pedal. I haven't used alot so not much of a reference point. This has 7 settings the ony one I didn't like was #3 suppose to be like a Leslie speaker- it ain't. Like the tones of 1,2, and 7. All kinda hissy but I'm still playin with it. Even makes the ceramic pickups sound good. I'm likin' it and the price was pretty good too. :D [imImageg][/img]

Now that you said that, you jogged my memory as to the other reason I didn't keep it--I remember it being kind of noisy, with a bit too much hiss and hum.
Your dissatisfaction with the Leslie setting might be mirroring mine--it could not produce a clean Leslie sound, only distorted...or were you just entirely dissatisfied with the Leslie effect overall?

We agree completely on the faux leslie sound of #3 very weak and noisy. Just had this strat about six weeks. the place I bought it dressed the frets and did a great setup, so it plays real nice not a fan of the pickups they gotta go. I plan on putting in a callaham trem and better pickups all sss. Thanks.
