I learned to play guitar, competently, a long time ago. Think: early 90s. Indeed, all my friends think I am "really good" on guitar simply because I can pick up a guitar and noodle away on a few chords... and they can't.

But I know that, much like Luke Skywalker in Empire, I never finished my training before taking a break from guitar for years, and there's a lot of things I'm not very good at or, in some cases, that I can't do at all.

So I loaded up a few DVDs tonight; stuff that I'd bought years ago and, in some cases, hadn't even opened. Verdict? They were absolutely terrible. No, seriously, they were really, really, really awful.

-- Most were old video transfers from the 80s.

-- All were really bad at putting chords onscreen while they're being played.

Result? I'm trying to decipher the chords the guy's playing on grainy old video -- at full speed -- and am falling behind, without even trying to play them on my guitar simultaneously, then he says, "OK, onto the next lesson!"

I'm like... WTF?

What I'm looking for is suggestions of DVDs that have good production values. For example, that are showing chords (or notes), onscreen, as the teacher is playing them.

I find it easier to sit there and play along if the screen is telling me: Am / G / Dm / F, etc, rather than trying to play "pick the chord" instead of actually playing along with the teacher.

So... any suggestions? Preferably stuff made in the last 5 years, with great production values and... oh yeah... preferably without men sporting poodle hairdos like some bad LA hair band.

Thanks :)

You might want to take a look at Justin's Guitar web site. He has a wide range of free online lessions. If you like what you see you can purchase copies of the lessions on DVD.

Thanks for the tip! Although it's not quite what I was looking for in terms of there's still no chords on the screen, etc, his teaching style is one I can get into and follow. He reminds me of a guitar teacher I had years ago, actually.
