I made the mistake of playing a MIM strat once. The sharp edges of the neck cut my fingers and the G string would not stay in tune.

The guitar was probably offended by your username. :?

To be honest, electric guitars are about two things:

1. The player

2. The amp

nothing else matters.

My wife cannot tell the difference between my $1700 American Deluxe Stratocaster and an Epiphone Les Paul Junior with a P90 pickup and a plywood body I bought for $43 off Craigslist.

I play though a Fender Blues Jr. III with a Cannabis Rex Speaker and use an MXR Classic Fuzz 108 pedal.

Now, both of these guitars play much differently, I like the Les Paul Jr. because it weighs like 5 pounds. My strat is just speical. It's a Deluxe strat, but it weighs 10 @#$%^ing pounds. It's Alder. It also resonates for days.

These two guitars play very differently and yes, the Deluxe strat does play a lot better than the Les Paul Jr.... but... like I said, you can't really tell much a difference between the two guitars.

If I plug them both into my Orange mini amp, they both sound like $@!&.

It's all about the Amp and the player. So find a guitar that feels good, who cares where its made and what its made out of.

Then... bring that guitar to a bunch of different shops and play a shitload of amps. Find your amp and you have found your sound.

In reflection, I would have not spent $1700 on a Deluxe strat, gone with a MIM strat off craigslist for $200 and then bought a Twin-Rock amp for $2200

It's all about the player and the amp.

someone said this post was started to stir the pot. okay. i'm getting the spoon from the kitchen.
i've never liked the single coils for a heavy tone. cleans are heavenly. if i want to play clean i grab the acoustic. i have one and only one hotrail in my mim and it gets a great heavy tone. very ballsy but not at all harsh. i did the same to the mia i bought and i just never could dial a sound to please me. traded the mia and kept the mim. plays better too.
i'd like to see a jim root sig model of the jag he is using on tour. but alas, i couldn't afford one.
another charvel? bet your $@!.

honestly the mexican is a good instument especially for the price good for a first guitar but i have to say the american is way better they feel so different the mexican neck is a bit thicker and seems to have a different finnish on the back of the neck as far as the electronics go the amarican is of a way higher standard being that i own a 2010 american standard and i play it so much i can pick the feel out anywhere anytime its basically my go to guitar so when i played the mexican i could instantly feel and hear the diference just my opinion on the matter it really pisses me off when people say there the same and the only difference is one says made in america...

Do the MIM Strats come with alnico pickups nowadays? I think a Strat should have those.

I think I'd go for either the U.S. Stratocaster or a Squier Classic Vibe Strat(which is made of alder and comes with the traditional alnico pickups).

I don't knock MIM Strats, but when I owned one it was a Deluxe Lone Star and had US pickups... I have played many MIM Standards in shops and I just don't think a non-US pup can compare to the American pups. I personally would not buy a MIM Strat unless it was a special issue Strat that has US pups or I was going to change pups and pots anyway.

I do have a MIM Jaguar and I love it... but it has the Blacktop series hbs. I have also heard nothing but praise for the Pawn Shop guitars... again, a special line probably receiving special attention.

I do wonder about the differences between polyester (Mexican) body finish vs. gloss urethane (American) body finish... why the difference there? And does it make a perceptible difference in tone or playability? In my experience, the MIMs also always have a thick shlacking of neck finish. My American Special is so nice with the satin neck!

Well, my opinion is the following:

If you like your MiM and are satisfied, then it's a good guitar (for you)

If you don't like it, get a better one!

Our opinion should not concern you in any way. It's you, who has to play that MiM, not us.
