If I'm drilling chords, which I do because I want to be more fluid with the many ways to do chords, or scales, I turn down the volume on the Blues Junior and play straight clean at low volume. I often do that when playing songs as well. The baby likes it and doesn't wake up. Imho, playing a Strat totally clean is better for musicianship. Strats played clean are very percussive and sensitive and you can really here everything you're doing - for good and bad. Like, if you're playing a chord and you're fingering is off, you're going to know it real clearly. With the gain up for that fat blues or SRVish tone, which I prefer just because I love it and I play that way often too, mistakes aren't so obvious.

'Cannot bear playing with headphones, personally.

Music is art. Headphones and guitar feel like like typing wearing mittens or painting wearing boxing gloves.

Just a friendly reminder.....

Practicing through headphones is horrible for your ears.

Could you speak up, I can't hear you.

My doctor tells me I have a little hearing loss in my right ear,
Naturally, I said "what?", [ ] between racing, guitar playing, and my ipod I can't say I was too surprised.

as a matter of fact
using a headphone when playing electric guitar
does actually harm your hearing
especially done so in long term basis
for lower volumn playing
try clean channel and lower the volumn
if it is odd hours when all others are sleeping
playing without an amp
and with your fingers
can still let you yourself hear your playing
while other don't

I can dial in a great tone with slight breakup on my ac30 at levels that can't be heard through a normal wooden door
No headphones for me

Here's somthing I hit on last night. This is a Highway One with CS TX Spc pickups on a Blues Junio.

Volume at 9, master at 2, eq at 7s across the board, reverb 3, on the guitar volume at 9, tone down to 3. It's a near-clean but fat blues tone at low volumes with edge and very responsive to playing with good Strat growl from the neck-mid. No need for headphones.
