In the interest of not being killed by my family while I pracitce the same scale or lick for the 400th time in the same hour, I decided to get a set of headphones that connect to my amp (GDEC Junior). I bought a set of wireless headphones from Radio Shack. I liked them because you just wear the headphones and don't hassle with the chord dangling from your head. The infrared transmitter plugs into the amp's headphone jack.

This is a good invention and it does what I wanted it to do. It allows me to practice without bugging the rest of the family.

The only criticism I have is that there is a bit of hiss that occurs when using it with the amp. This hiss does not occur when using it with, say, a radio or MP3 player. It's not objectionable to me. I find that if I turn the volume control on the headphones down, and turn the volume on the amp up, then the hiss is minimized.

Cost was about $45, which included buying the rechargeable batteries. The headphone transmitter is also a charger, so you just plug the headphones into the transmitter when you're not using them so the batteries will charge. Very nice.

Just a friendly reminder.....

Practicing through headphones is horrible for your ears.

Best advice I can give for practicing is to just turn both the guitar and amp down OR Don't plug the guitar in at all.

Hell, I think 90% of my practice is amp-less in the first place. I'm using 010-046 strings and can hear everything just fine.

I always wait until my wife is at work, or gone somewhere.......that's when I practice.......if she IS around........then I just turn down the volume on my guitar.......not as loud (tubes still cranked up)....but I can hear much better tone, than what would come through headphones.

Now......when I'm in my mountain home.......it's all forest, with no one around.......then I can crank it up all I want!

I like to practice unplugged. It calms the mind.

One question about the comment on headphones being bad for your ears. I don't turn the volume up very loud. It's probably between 70 and 80dB. Is there something inherently wrong with using headphones, or is it the volume at which you listen through them. What is the problem with them?
