Clapton kicked off his 2013 Tour in Phoenix yesterday.

Off the 22-tracklist the Cream-era classic Sunshine of Your Love and the "retired" Tears in Heaven/My Father Eyes made a welcomed return.

Nice to see Black Cat Bone on the menu. His rendition at Irving Plaza 28/11/94 was very good, although I doubt this one will reach that night's standard! (that show is the best live performance I've ever heard from EC in any guise).

Here's one of the "retired" songs played with the "black beauty":

We just got home from our little jaunt to Pheonix to see Clapton's opening night. Obviously, the above videos don't do justice to the sound we got in the hall. To anyone that says Clapton has been phoning it in, you need to buy a ticket and go see this show. This was a completely different show than the last time I saw him. The band is nine strong musicians. A lot of the songs were pretty long to give everyone their time in the spot light. Paul Carrack was great on organ. He sang two of his hits from Ace and Squeeze and also the last song of their encore. Greg Leisz did a great job on pedal steel guitar, and his presence added a real down home taste to a lot of the arrangements. It may be common knowledge to you guys, but I didn't know Doyle Bramhall plays with his strings upside down, the high E on top. Watching him play is weird as he does most of his bends down and most of his picking up. I've only seen one other guy play a guitar that way. He did a great job trading lead licks with EC. The drummer, Steve Jordan, worked his freaking butt off. The whole band was excellent and it was pretty amazing that there was so much definition to the sound with that many instruments. I think the sound guy was really working the faders to keep the right instrument up front and not create a mish mash of sound. For you guys that have tickets for this tour, it will be worth the wait. Not the best show I've ever been to, but a real memorable one. Even my wife said she was glad we made the trip to see the show. I'm getting to like EC more and more. He's aging well, though he is starting to look like pictures I have of my dad.

If that's the band's make up for the entire tour, everyone appears to be in for a treat.

Bramhall's been playing guitar like that for ages.[If you haven't done so already, you need to find yourself a copy of his CD 'Arc Angels'. It's to die for. One of his songs is also on 'Riding With the King']. He's also done a lot of work with Eric, notably on The Robert Johnson Sessions. His music has a certain sound to it that's almost hallmark.]Saw him do a solo gig with his band on Austin City Limits. Really fine show.

Glad to hear that your money was well spent. Thanks for sharing.

The story of that tour appeared in an guitar mag interview. Bramhall gets wind of the fact that Waters is going to audition for a lead guitarist for that tour. Bramhall owns a freak of a cassette player which can cut out the lead guitar track. So he goes ahead and woodsheds all of Gilmour's solos to a dime, auditions for Waters and gets the gig.

I got so cranked about my mention of Arc Angels that I went into Google, found the band's website, and ordered their compilation CD which was released four years ago. That band is soooo awwsome.....but just consider who was in it.
There's something about the way they put music together that has a signature sound of its own. Can't explain it but every time I resurrect that CD it just knocks me out all over again.

Thanks for the review...I'm looking forward to the show. Did he do any of the tunes from his latest album?

The only one I know was from the new album is "Gotta Get Over". I have to say it may have been one of the top songs of the night. It really did sound good live, very powerfull.
Best solo of the night for me was on I Shot The Sheriff. He ripped that one up good.

Love it!! Far cry from the old days of coordinated outfits and matching guitar finishes.
Now you can go out on stage dressed in your Sunday's worst, playing a guitar which looks like it was dragged behind a truck through forty miles of bad road, and earn a million bucks a gig doing it 8) . Man, was I born too early.
