I'm sure you all agree.. the spam is getting a little out of hand. I'm sure it isn't easy for Brad to monitor the entire forum at all times.

Could we have a couple of Fender Forum users appointed as moderators to keep the lounge clean?

Thank you.

I stop in daily. I've also been a moderator (though briefly) before.

As another suggestion.. a tighter limit on signature size would also be nice. No offense, Buxom.

Hey Toronado: you'd make a good, tactful moderator (I mean it). I vote for you! :D

But anyway, yes, the spam is sometimes right out of control. Earlier today six of the first eight threads were spam and nearly a dozen of them in total down the first page. That's too many even to lampoon!

Ya gotta wonder, who the heck is it who buys financial products or online services or even fitted kitchens (for flip's sake!) from spam posts on a guitar forum? Someone must I guess, or they'd give up and go away. Bizarro!

Cheers - C

Ah, the dreaded spam hell. Perhaps Brad could turn the filters up a notch ;-)

Or we write an algorithm for it... gonna be a right old laugh.

My point is, if it's just for spam, no mod needed, really. I'm sure there's a simple way to block it. (Captcha, anyone?)

Cheers

Nutter

+1 :D
I have noticed too. If I remember, started seeing spammers in mid 2010 at first. Ceri, back in the olden days when the Fender lounge started (rock age? 8) ) 2007 and 2008 , whew long time ago  , were there as many spammers?

No, definitely not. There's obviously nowadays software around that allows these people to spam loads of forums without much effort. I guess it only takes one person in thousands of views to bite their hook to make it seem worthwhile to them.

No doubt the forces of law and order will be catching up soon with better filtering software, as Nutter suggests. But Brad knows his stuff and the fact all this spam is currently getting through probably means the software solution isn't quite up to speed yet, or he'd be using it.

Oh well. It's a pain, isn't it?

Cheers - C

As a forum Administrator elsewhere, I know that this version of PHPBB forum software has options in the Administrative Control Panel to eliminate spam. Obviously, it is not being used to it's fullest capacity.

And meanwhile the SPAM just keeps piling up.

Come on, Brad. Hit that Delete button.

Not if it stimulates an excellent response from an honorable Forum member Ceri, thankyou :D I've a feeling a "spam eliminator" may be one of the wishes in Brad's letter to Santa this year

I agree, I don't come here as much as I used to and when I do there's too much spam. but now i'm wondering....who decided that junk solicitation type stuff online was called spam to begin with? poor spam. no one likes spam. if i were a hacker i'd send tons of "spam" to the Spam corporate headquarters. just in hopes of seeing a headline about "SPAM DRIVING SPAM CRAZY" or something. ha.

Back in the "golden age" of this forum, there were very limited hours of operation. There wasn't 24 hour access. There was way less casual traffic, a smaller community, and much less incentive for spammers, who would have had to coordinate their timing to even get on here.

Aaah, the Golden Age. When men were real men, women were real women, and small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri were real small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri.

There is at least one user of this entire Forum who knows what the heck I'm talking about...

Anyhow. Do you remember the Two Or Three Club, Twelvebar? (Or was it called the Three Or Four Club - my brain gets so blurry all these years and years later). Do you think the gentleman in question is still with us? If he is, it might help explain why people feel we're needing a bit more moderating round here.
