Hi, I was hoping someone could point me towards a good Power Chords Tutorial DVD. As weird as it sounds, I never learned anything about power chords and I would like to start. I learn best from video tutorials and was hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks to anyone who can assist, I appreciate it.

Nothing to really learn. Just look up the position and do it. They have different names, but they're all the same.

Learn any AC/DC song and you will have three of them down.

When you play the root and the fifth you get a power chord. I use the term "chord" loosely here. So, you can make any maj/min chord a power chord by removing the third. Take a regular open C chord, now mute the E out of it. (under your 2nd finger) You now have C5 or C power chord.

They are good to use when the 3rd makes the chord sound counter to the mood you're conveying. Or you have a crazy lead guitarist playing all over the place and you don't want to clash with him. Often the third offers some of the biggest clashes, but it also is responsible for carrying the mood (maj/min) so it can be important.

Easiest to learn are double stop power chords. Root note and fifth, just two strings.

Haha I should take offense to that, but it's actually true

But yeah, trueblue, power chords are pretty much the easiest chords to play on a guitar. Just two strings. Just fret a string with your first finger, then the string below it (or above, depending on how you look at it.) and two frets up on the neck with your third finger. For example, fret 7 on the 6th string, and fret 9 on the 5th string.

Power chord, simple as that.

Or drop D and just barre the last 3 strings. Chug chug chug.

I guess for 20 years I have been playing power chords with the 3rd as well. I guess thats not a power chord. I have never played them with 2 fingers.

Tell that to Malcolm Young - very few power chords in any AC/DC song, it's all mostly open chords. ;)

Kidding me? Black in Black, Shook me all night... etc. Just because there in the open position does not mean the third is not muted. I think it would be hard to find an AC/DC song without a R5 (power) chord in it. I think your confusing bar position power chords for open position power chords. Angus liked those open position R5 chords.

It is still a power chord. Adding the higher octave root note simply makes the chord sound a bit fuller and brighter. Great for clean and overdrive tones, but it may sound too muddy when the distortion is cranked up.

And there's also the inverted power chords where the root note is on the higher string. EG:
x33xxx
On that power chord, the F is the root note.

While not a video, I found and ordered a decent looking 64 page book from Amazon called "Power Chords: A Complete Guide to Rock's Most Essential Sound". Hopefully it will give me a good beginning to power chords.

After 64 pages you will be the power chord master.

How did anybody manage to write 64 pages on power chords?

I could write a comprehensive method book on all things power chord in a page and a half, and that's if the text is double spaced...

Dropped D power chords would be book two, the intermediate method.

Open tunings for the 6 page advanced master class.

I wish there where power scales, that would be cool. Hum... maybe I'm on to something scales only consisting of the 1st and 5th. DVD comes out very soon.
