I was already late so I only played her for a few minutes, but my first impressions of the Fender Dreadnought CD-140S were very positive. It seems that this guitar gives a lot of bang (rather twang) for your buck.

I'm itching to pull the trigger on that beautiful black one I played so I would appreciate comments and feedback from those who already have one.

Thanks and Cheers!
BM

p.s. I originally posted this in the All other Fender guitars section of the forum but it seems there's not much traffic on those roads. :(

Edited title to correct model number (CD-140S changed to CD-60)

I tried it a couple months ago when looking for an accoustic and it was OK for the price point, nothing really bad to say about it...

But I bought the Epiphone AJ-100CE instead... same price point, but solid Mahogany sides/back instead of laminated, and it's a cutaway plus electric...

I've been very happy with it and several veteran players have commented on how good it sounds, even better than one guy's low-end Martin (according to him).

There's probably value for the price w/ the CD-140s, but Fender didn't make their reputation on accoustics, so I likely would avoid buying a more expensive model from them.

cheers!

Hi.

A correction.

The Epiphone AJ-100CE does not have a solid top, sides and back. They are referred to in the literature as "select", and "select" does not equal solid.

The Fender Dreadnought CD-140S does have a solid spruce top.

From the Epiphone Specs sheet:

NanoFlex Pickup
The AJ-100CE features an ultra-slim saddle pickup for amplified performance.

Body Tonewoods
The top of the AJ-100CE is made from select spruce, while the back and sides are constructed from mahogany, giving the AJ-100CE balanced expression, warm bass, and excellent projection.

Rosewood Fingerboard with Dot Inlays
The fingerboard of the AJ-100CE is constructed from rosewood. The resilience of this durable wood makes the fingerboard extremely balanced and stable, and gives each chord and note clarity and bite.

Angled Headstock
Unlike cheaper designs, all Epiphones feature a 14-degree headstock that gives you more pressure at the nut and so you get more sustain with less tuning hang-ups caused by "string-tree" gadgets.

Specs:

Hardware: Chrome
Scale: 25.5 inches
Nut width: 1.68 inches
Neck: Set, Mahogany
Fretboard: Rosewood
Inlays: Dot
Body material: Mahogany
Top: Select Spruce
Finishes available: Natural

cheers!

Hi; I have one, I've had it almost 2 years now and I love it, it may not be the best guitar on the market but for the price i think its a great guitar.

Firstly, thanks very much for the feedback.

Secondly, my apologies for sending everyone on a wild "acoustic chase". The guitar I played and the one about which I'm inquiring is NOT the CD-140S but rather the CD-60. I discovered my gaff when I called to confirm what the salesman told me about it coming with a hard case because I found no mention of this on the Fender website. Duh, that's because the CD-140S doesn't come with a hard case but the CD-60 does; at least in North America.

Given the way it plays, its $200 street price and a hard case, I'm thinking this is a really sweet deal. Unless I hear any horror stories about the guitar exploding in its sleep or similar tales of doom and regret, I'm getting close to pulling the trigger.

Cheers and Thanks!

Hey for $200 incl. Hard Case, that's not bad.

But, be sure it's what you want and don't have Guitar Envy later because you can't plug it in or such.

A Cutaway is nice if you spend any time at the high end of the fretboard.

The Fender CD-60CE gives you both a Cutaway and a Fishman Isys III pickup System with Active On-Board Pre-Amp and Tuner + the Hard case for just $45 more (even less if you go with Amazon because there won't be any Sales Tax + Free S/H)... it's a much better value.

cheers!

Thanks for the words of wisdom, Lightnin MN.

Although we don't usually play up in the stratosphere on a 20-fret acoustic and although I don't think I'll need to plug her in, given the price difference these options may be worth getting.

Hmm... what to do, what to do, what to play?

I can get the CD-60CE locally for the same price on Amazon so I'll try her out, she how she plays and sounds compared to the CD-60 and post an update.

Thanks & Cheers!

Look at my signature. I am extremely happy with my CD60CE, and I only paid $269 for it with the HSC. This guitar is easily worth $200 more, sounds great, plays great, and it has a killer price. Mine is a 2011 FSR all-mahogany, but the good news is Fender brought it back as a non electric. I played mine and the other CD60's and the mahogany back and sides really makes this guitar sound sweet. Toss away the factory coated strings and install a set of D'Addario phosphor bronze 12-53's and they will really bring this guitar to life.

G'day, personally I'd go for the T-Bucket CE 300.
They have a nice pickup, equalizer and built in tuner. I think they're around $300.

The CE 400 (maple) is also nice, a bit more expensive though.

It's good to have the electricals there when you need 'em.
Goodonya ...Mark.

Hmm... more options to consider and the cost seems to be slowly edging upwards. :)

If we keep going in this direction then at some point we may be talking about the Martin D-45 Dreadnought and the low list price of $10,599

Thanks! I really love that guitar, it my favorite and gets played the most.

Here's the new all mahogany CD60. I think it looks even better without the cutaway. Keep in mind, this guitar migth be a FSR.

Went to the local music shop today and spent some quality A/B time with the CD-60 and CD-60CE. In the end I decided that I don't want the "electrics" and that I do want the cutaway.

I wasns't able to find this on the Fender website. Would you know the model number?

Thanks & Cheers!

The model number is CD60CE AM (AM stands for all-mahogany)

The one I have was a 2011 FSR (Factory Special Run) Fender doesn't have them anymore. You might be lucky if you go to a Fender dealer they might have a leftover modelnhanging from the wall. And sorry can't have the cutaway without the electronics, that's what the "CE" stands for (cutaway electric).

The link I provided above is for the new 2013 CD60 AM. But no cutaway and electronics. Still for $200 with hard case street price is a hell of a deal.

Thanks for the clarification, 1neeto.

You're right that it's a "hell of a deal" and my first reaction would be to just buy it but Lightnin MN is also right about "be sure it's what you want" and I know that I want the cutaway.

As for the electronics it would appear they come part and parcel with the cutaway and we can't break up the set. ... I may end up going with the CD60SE either the all mahogany but I also like the sleek black look.

Cheers!
