I wish I had VH1C but you have to pay. I just record the shows I want so if it's late at night I can just watch it the next day or whenever I want. :D

Pop music has been that way for ages.

And rock 'n' roll was allll about half naked people!! Lol.

I really think modern music gets a bad rap [no pun intended]. There's plenty of quality music being made just now by very talented musicians (that includes the fields of pop, hip hop and rap and so on as well as your standard rock genre).

When I was younger I was of the opinion that all good music was from the 60s/70s, all this stuff nowadays was meh etc, etc.

Thankfully I'm no longer of the same opinion ;)

Maybe. But I'm tired of digging through the Internet for good quality music. If i find ONE good thing, there is probably a HUNDRED other good things I don't know about or can't find. Even with all the commercialism even in the beginning, MTV kind of made it a central 'meeting place' for music, and you could go from there, even if a band wasn't on MTV. Now, there IS NO central 'meeting place' for music. Radio used to be that central 'meeting place', and I think MTV (and U.S. radio deregulation, resulting in those mega-corporation 'format' machines) killed it, at least here in the U.S.. Now that MTV is no longer what it was in the beginning, I wonder what the current substitute is? I'd LOVE to know!

And half naked people doing stupid crap doesn't qualify it to me as Rock 'N' Roll if there's no music. The old MTV 'Beach House' shows weren't all that entertaining to me, either. And I don't even want to think about MTV's 'Jackass'.

MTV is just one of the reasons my wife and I got rid of cable all together. It did take some adjustment initially, but we came to realize that cable is terrible. Instead of staring at the TV watching whatever was on, I pick up my guitars more often and she makes jewelry when she is inspired. It's great. Last Saturday I played each of my guitars for over an hour each because there was nothing to watch on network TV. If I had cable, I probably would have tuned in to something really useless.

I'm over 50 and must agree; not much good...
I do remember when MTVwas pretty cool playing live concert clips; then some producers started to interprete songs and as Bill cosby said it became (is) "A nightmare set to music". Then they went political.
I don't care to see those bands "mime" a polite word for FAKING. They have real instuments (sometimes) to FAKE on when us peon had air guitars. To me they looked just as silly as those people standing around at parties playing their "air" instruments or drummers at discos playing to the the RECORDS and there weren't even any microphones on the the drum kit. Talk about dumming down!
I know that some bands take on shall we say unorthodox appearences so the public will remember them; behave in odd (to me anyways) ways while on stage; what happened to being yourself?
Anyway I don't watch MTV or VH1 for any reason.

hm, miming has been around since the dawn of music on TV.

It's usually less to do with the band or artist than it is that the particular studio they're in just can't handle live sound in such a away.

The famous old grey whistle test and, indeed, top of the pops were all dubbing artists for years until very recently.

But yes it is lame and I hate it. But it isn't always the artist's decision. :)

Miming "live" however... :x

Yeah I realize the artist didn't have a choice; it was just SO LAME to hear the same EXACT inflection in the singing while this person is mouthing the words and the throat is totally relaxed...then the songs fades away....
Those studios sure held a lot of "beautiful people" dancing!
I mean I was just a runny nosed kid while my older sisters watched that stuff and I said "hey wheres his mic? where's the band?
Is it possible to replicate the recording so EXACTLY? Man those must have been some S/H musicians in that studio...

Hehe yeah, I always used to wonder where the guitar cables were or why the drummer was sitting just tapping the kit when the soundtrack has booming percussion!

Of course it all makes sense now but as a kid it's slightly odd!

We had something similar here in the U.S. with American Bandstand. Soul Train was similar, too. Basically the same thing as TOTP, just not on prime time. Which reminds me, I heard that TOTP has gone away, too. True?

I'm afraid that I'm going to have to bite the bullet and try to get Fuse, in spite of the extra cost. I'm really uninspired and underwhelmed by CMT and BET. MTV and VH1 are dead to me, and have been for years-in spite of hoping otherwise.

MTV is really lame-ass now. I am so sick of all these reality shows on all the TV stations. Every time I tune into MTV it seems like the same tape loop has been playing since I last tuned in.
I wonder why they even have the MTV Music Awards, they obviously have no dedication to music. The station could drop off the face of the earth and I would now miss it.
If you want decent (any) music you need to tune into Ovation or PBS.

Not like the days of the Headbangers Ball, that's for sure. I used to stay up late just to watch that.

I wish MTV would start showing reruns of Midnight Special with Wolfman Jack (RIP).
