My assumption is that the Group Hug / Button Pressing figures will be subjected to some highly advanced statistical Kung-Fu magic and the result will be the purchase price. Then a design or designs will be put forth - either by us or by FMIC - which are feasible given the established purchase price. It would be at this point, when we have a design and price, that members will have to make a commitment and back it up with prepayment.

We might also come to learn that there's a threshold number of units we have to commit to before they will even consider moving forward.

The Tele is an American Deluxe. Year = 2000. Not sure if you can make out the abalone dot markers in that small pic. I'd guess that guitar might be just a tad out of our group hug range.

'Fraid so. Though if I were in the market to commission a Custom Shop Masterbuild (I'm not :( ) a maple neck Tele with a double-bound body would be high on my lust list. Love binding on a Tele - but I gotta have that maple fingerboard. Abalone dots? That's just icing the cake and smothering it candles too! :D

The Strat is a Koa Top but I don't know about it being a special edition. Actually I don't know very much about it at all. The one thing I am kinda sure about (but not completely sure) is that I think I bought it before 2006... It is definitely a pretty guitar and I could easily find a use for a second one.

Well. I don't know when it started and finished, but I do know it's there in the 2006 Frontline catalog on the Special Edition pages. There was a matching Koa Top Tele too. The catalog says:
Frontline 2006 wrote:
NEW KOA STRATOCASTER 026-5106-537
The Special Edition Koa Stratocaster guitar marks the first time the highly sought-after and exotic koa wood has been used outside the Custom Shop. The Koa Strat features a koa top on a basswood body, a birds-eye maple neck with a modern "C"-shape and a rosewood fingerboard. Seymour Duncan AlNiCo Pro II pickups, a two-point synchronised tremolo, and a pearl pickguard and dot inlays.

What's not to like?

The Lite Ash Strats and Teles were in the same Special Edition section (I've got the Tele) and were made in the Korean plant. I think the Koas were made in Korea too, but I couldn't say for sure. Curiously, my Lite Ash Tele doesn't carry a Special Edition decal on the back of the headstock, and I have a vague memory that the Koas didn't either...?

Anyhow. You have it as I have it.

Doc, if you could have a Clapton Strat in a non-regular finish, what colour would you choose?

Not to put words in his mouth, but there's the indication in his earlier post that Brad thinks the Official Fender Forum Guitar might be something from the quality end of the range, and he (no doubt rightly) thinks a Strat would get more uptake than any other model - outside of our specialised group on this thread. (I do have sympathy with the "not-another-Strat!" point of view.)

Whenever a model like the Clapton or Johnson Strats come out in a new finish there's people out there who just have to add it to their guitar vault, so imagine the collectability of a very limited edition EC or EJ in a non-standard finish like, say, Ebony Burst (35) or Apple Red Flake (25), with the Forum logo and COA into the bargain.

Man, the other forums out there would go ape over that! Very few guitars put on value the day you drag them home, but I wouldn't be surprised if this one did, judging by that earlier forum's experience.

(I've also got a sinking feeling you'd need Artist approval for such a thing... but one step at a time.)

Cheers - C

Of this I'm quite certain and as you put it, FMIC probably won't go ahead "for anything less than x$'s to the buyer and a run of y#'s. However I don't think the minimum order threshold is going to be anything outrageous. My own FSR 2010 American Standard came from a run of twenty-five. I recall other members with FSR guitars with even shorter runs. As far as numbers go, I think we should be okay.

What we need to concentrate on is getting those Group Hug / Button Pressing figures up and running.

This idea sounds interesting, actually I really like it.
I doubt that EJ or EC either one would approve it though, as you stated. Still something to consider though.

Mine is most definitely made in Korea.
Again, I'll check my invoice when I get home.
You may be right about the year. I never paid much attention to it because it wasn't an American guitar.
I've been known to be snobbish that way.

Thing is, even though I never thought much of it when I bought it (mostly for the pretty body and the birds eye maple neck) now that I've hot rodded it the thing has really grown on me. It came with Seymour Duncan pups or maybe they were only "Duncan Designed" like some Epiphones and I wasn't a fan of them at all and I pretty much yanked them right away. The pups were bright to a violent extreme. I couldn't stand them. The first thing I did was to open it up and look at the pots thinking they might 500s but they were 250s.

One thing I've been wanting to install on it is a steel trem block to compare it against stock for sustain but I contacted Callaham and they don't make a block for it.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I watched the thread slip to take the No. 50 position and thought of doing the same thing but you beat me to it. :)

Doc put it well when he said we're "Wait'in on Brad who's wait'in on us whose wait'in on Brad who's wait'in on us ..."
For many reasons - I'm sure lack of desire is not among them - Brad's input on this thread has been sparse but I think he may be telling us more than we're hearing.

Understandably we are eager to see this project come to fruition and get our hands on "The Precious" (Gollum voice off). Some of us feel that we can't really discuss price until we decide on the specs and others believe we can't talk specs without first establishing a price. I think both approaches can achieve the same result but ultimately what matters is how the people on the FMIC side of the fingerboard see things and for them it's price point first.

Brad told us to keep the Group Hug / Button Pressing roster going because it "... is really the info most needed to realistically start a feature set discussion." Presently we have only nine names on the list which given the scope of this project may be seen by FMIC as a lack of interest on our part.

If there is a genuine interest and the numbers are there to support it, then people need to step up and put their John Avatar on the list along with their respective Group Hug / Button Pressing prices.

    Cheers!

Average maximum price prepared to pay is working out at $1355, average minimum price $544 so far. $949 being a rough estimate of the middle of those two prices.
That gives you an idea on where the level of spec. See what Fender are offering around that price range then beg a few goodies on top.
Highway One sort of price isn't it? Which in all truth would offer a decent platform to work with. They were a good selling range so people obviously found them usable.

Hi nikininja. The Highway One is a good example to show that we can get quality for under $1k. We also have another example that Doc gave with the 2013 FSR Limited Edition '52 Telecaster for $825. However for anything to happen, I think FMIC wants to see more people throwing their picks in the ring. Right now there are only nine, and although I'm not the brightest light on the statistics tree, I have a feeling that nine is not enough for FMIC to take any formal interest. For those with more wattage on the subject, what would be a statistically significant number?

    Cheers!

Lets see then.. I'm not going to hold my breath but even still, would be a shame to get to the conclusion of not having enough punters to proceed to the next level.

Having said that, that probably doesn't rule out a special neckplate or whatnot.. In fact if there was such a cost involved it would be well within reach of the wider community-meaning more feasibility to produce something on a smaller scale :)

Otherwise, I may just end up buying something else.. I've been eyeing up a nitro finished classic series or FMT Floyd rose Strat :) Win/Win. :D

These were essentially my thoughts along with a pickguard.

I believe more forumites would be able to afford a pickguard or neck plate. A specially made guitar is going to be pretty unattainable for those with limited budgets. Let's see what Fender proposes.

Actually, this is what I was implying with my above post as only a handful can afford any kind of new guitar at any price point. Frankly, I really don't see FMIC making any proposals thus far in wake of the Forum T-shirt offering. I'm sure they remember quite well where in spite of all the rampant enthusiasm for a forum shirt, ultimately and again, when it came time for the aforesaid "rampantly enthusiastic" to ante-up, only a small percentage did.

As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.

It appears from the conversation in the last few posts that we've done a 360 again and back to the starting gate. IMHO we really need to hear from the company as to what they are prepared to offer us.
