I never served myself, and as I get older, I wished I did. I would of gone Marines like my younger brother.

No thanks are ever necessary, nice to hear though! I enjoyed all 28 years of my active duty service in the USAF. Having worked with and trained Marines a time or two, I don't find the article hard to believe, although not sure how he survived his "Fall from the curb" :!: :!: :!:

God Bless and a big Hand Salute to all my fellow Vets :!:

Thanks LM! I was in the USAF for 8 years only and didn't see any combat but it was quite an experience, one that I would recommend to any young person without a steady job or not in college.

Agreed... I was Navy Air for 14 yrs., 5 WESTPACs and had 'Red Stuff' zip past my canopy on more than a couple of occasions.

I still thank all Veterans for the sacrifices they made which I have benefitted from.

I have a nephew who, after squandering a full scholarship to MT State due to a snowboarding obsession, is now wandering around doing go-nowhere, minimum-wage work. I have tried to advise him about careers opportunities in the Services, but his non-serving father seems to oppose that at every turn. But, I think it'd do him a world of good.

cheers!

The same has happened to me, only the opposition comes with a look that says "how dare you suggest my child risk their life for their country" to which I reply "I was in for 8 years and the closest that I ever came to battle was the drunken brawls outside the NCO clubs or bars off base. Still doesn't help because it is their little darlings. They'll change their tune but by then the now middle aged substance abuser is etrenched in their home borrowing and mooching all the way to social security

I served 20 years in the Navy, from 1980-2000 and have been on several Wes-Pacs. I retired as a E-7 SHC , which is a Ship's Serviceman Chief Petty Officer. My last 4 years were spent at Great lakes, training recruits. I'm glad I made a 20 year career and have no regrets. I got to see the world, met my wife, saved all of my money and now have a monthly pension for the rest of my life.
