I did this with my LTD EC-100 to try it out and i ended up loving. It your hand moves effortlessly around the neck. I just used regular fine sandpaper.

I think i might do it to my blacktop tele :P

Tried it on my PRS Custom 24 SE and liked the results.

For some reason though, I'm very reluctant to do it to any of my Strats.

Cheers!

The neck does indeed become much smoother but the finish is also dulled at the same time. Of course on the back of the neck the only person who may see it is the drummer so depending on your point of view this may or may not be an issue.

More importantly though, I think that after a given degree of "smoothness", making the neck smoother has no effect on how fast we can play. Immediately after the sandpaper treatment to my PRS I could have sworn that I was playing faster than before. However when the excitement of the new discovery wore off and I put things to the test with my other guitars, I realized that this wasn't the case. :(

Still the neck is "smoother" and on the smoothness pot it goes to eleven. :!:

As always, just MHO and YMMV

Cheers!

Yah ... I'm sorry but I'm not gonna take the "green scrubby" equivalent of sand paper to my guitars. Ain't gonna happen. They play just fine as they are, thanks anyway. If I wanted to 'relic' my own guitar I'd just throw one in the box of a 4X4 pickup with a half a yard of crushed gravel and a couple cinder blocks and go four wheelin' in the whoop-de-doos.

But you go right ahead. Knock yourself out.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I have seen this video before. When I was younger, I did it to my guitars. Honestly, if it works for you, then by all means do it. None of my present guitars have had this done and they all play fine. Some people just shouldn't choke the heck out of the neck, problem solved.
